Commitment Spotlight: '21 RHP Spencer Seigworth

Brett Thorney
Area Scout

2021 RHP Spencer Seigworth (Valley Christian HS) was a standout pitcher at the 2021 Top Prospect Games this past June earning himself an invite to participate in the #PBRFutureGames. Seigworth had a solid showing on the mound in Georgia sparking interest from college programs from around the country. The projectable RHP recently made his college commitment to Butler University. Here's what he had to say..

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Seigworth: I have loved Butler University ever since I was a little kid having grown up in that area.  I knew I wanted a smaller school with great academics.  I love the environment, campus, and the baseball program.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Seigworth: Columbia, Xavier, Taylor, Point Loma and Pepperdine

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Seigworth: I first met the coaching staff when I attended a camp at Butler last fall.  I stayed in contact with them and sent video of game footage and updates.   They also came to see me play at the PBR Future Games in Georgia over the summer.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Seigworth:  Absolutely 100%.  I am a multi-sport athlete (I play basketball as well) and it was very time-consuming to handle the recruiting process while playing two sports and maintaining high grades.  This will leave me more time to just play and train.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Seigworth: I just truly love the school and it felt like the right fit.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Seigworth: Definitely not just one person.  My parents taught me the importance of attitude, effort, hard work, mental toughness and letting go of the things out of my control. I’ve been blessed to have some amazing coaches through the years.  My pitching coach Brendan Donnelly has absolutely made me the pitcher I am today. Coach Jeff Ope (Opalewski) from PBR definitely played a significant role in my recruiting process.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

Seigworth: Because I have an older sister that went through the recruiting process, I knew it would take a lot of emailing, phone calls and follow-up to reach out to my desired schools.  Also as a pitcher I had to face the challenge of being limited on mound /showcase time.  It wasn’t difficult, but it was very time-consuming.  It helped me that I started very early researching schools to determine what I wanted in a school and took my ACT during my sophomore year.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Seigworth: My freshman season they have a lot of development and learning planned.  They also expect me to compete in order to have an immediate impact.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Seigworth: Playing in the Cal Ripken tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC when I was 10 years old.  It was so much fun.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Seigworth:  Jacob Berry
