Complete Kansas City Fall Showcase Writeups



It was a cool, crisp fall day on Saturday at Longview Community College for the KC Fall Prospect ID Showcase, and the players in attendance made an impression on the PBR staff with ability in all phases of the game.

Individual Player Write ups (in alphabetical order):
Colson Bayles, 3B, KC Christian HS, Class of 2014:
Bayles has a projectable 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame. At third base, Bayles showed to be a sure handed fielder, with range to his forehand side. His throws come from a 3/4 arm slot, with a top throw of 67-mph across the diamond. At the plate, Balyes has a balanced stance with a short stride and level swing through extension, showing the ability to be an effective pull hitter. Additionally, Bayles showed some speed with a 7.03 60 and recorded an exit velo of 78-mph.

 

Tanner Beagle, RHP/1B, Pleasant Hill HS, Class of 2014:
The 5-fot-10, 188-pound Beagle showed to be an effective player both on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, Beagle comes from an over the top arm slot delivering a heavy 71-73 mph fastball with sink action. He also showed a gradual breaking 10-to-4 breaking ball (60-63 mph) and a 65-68 mph change up that was down in the zone with arm side run. At first base, Beagle moves well around the bag, with sure hands and accurate throws when turning double plays. At the plate, Beagle has a balanced stance with a long stride and level, line drive producing swing that showed the ability to pull the ball. When his timing was on, Beagle showed some power potential. Beagle had an exit velo of 80-mph and ran a 7.38 60.

 

Nathan Broadbent, OF/RHP, Rockhurst HS, Class of 2014:
Broadbent is a lanky 6-foot-1, 160-pound two way player who showed feel for three pitches on the mound; as well as an effective outfielder and hitter. On the mound, Broadbent comes from a low 3/4 arm slot with a heavy fastball that was thrown in the 71-73 mph range, topping at 74-mph with arm side run. He also showed an early breaking 11-to-5 curve ball (62-65 mph) and a 65-66 mph change up with arm side movement. In the outfield, Broadbent took aggressive routes to the ball and got it quickly out of his glove with a top throw of 75-mph. Offensively, Broadbent has an athletic stance, a short stride, and good rhythm. His swing is level, with extension through contact and he remains balanced through his swing delivering line drives. Broadbent ran a 7.44 60 and had an exit velo of 74-mph.

 

Jordan Hennon, C/RHP, Lee’s Summit West, Class of 2015:
Hennon is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound two way player. Behind the plate, Hennon showed to be an effective receiver, with a stiff wrist and soft hands. He has fundamental footwork, with a top pop time of 2.19. Offensively, the left handed hitter has an unorthodox, yet effective stance and showed quick bat speed with barrel whip through the zone and some pull side power. On the mound, Hennon comes from a high 3/4  arm slot with fastballs in the 68-71 mph range, a 58-62 mph breaking ball that stayed down in the zone, and a 65-68 mph straight change up. Hennon had an exit velo of 75-mph.

 

Kris Johnson, MIF, Lee’s Summit West HS, Class of 2014:
Johnson is an undersized 5-foot-7, 135-pound middle infielder. At shortstop, Johnson showed to have sure hands, with an accurate arm across the diamond. Offensively, Johnson has a crouched stance with good bat speed and a slightly uphill bat path. He showed the ability to stay on top of the ball with consistent hard contact gap to gap. John ran a 7.28 60 and had a top exit velo at 74-mph.

 

Tyler Lockler, MIF/RHP, Raytown South HS, Class of 2013:
Lockler is an athletic 5-foot-10, 170-pound unsigned senior. The two way Lockler excelled in the field and at the plate, while showing the ability to throw three pitches for a strike. At shortstop, Lockler has a good approach to the ball with a quick, clean exchange and long arm action. He showed good range, while delivering accurate throws across the diamond, with a top throw of 73-mph. Offensively, the left handed hitter has looseness in his swing, creating barrel whip through the zone, producing hard line drives to the right half of the field. On the mound, Lockler’s fastball sat 72-75 mph with some sink, breaking ball showed 10-to-4 shape at 65-67 mph, and a change up with fastball arm speed in the 67-69 mph range with sink and fade action. Additionally, Lockler ran a 7.25 60 and had an exit velo of 79-mph.

 

Dakota McCelland, C, Raytown HS, Class of 2015:
McCelland is a strong bodied 5-foot-9, 180-pound catcher. During bullpen sessions, McCelland showed the ability to effectively stick the ball, with soft hands. While blocking, he had good instincts and body control. McCelland’s top pop time was an accurate 2.32. At the plate, McCelland has an athletic setup with a short stride and hands in a low starting position. His swing was a bit long at times; when he raised his hands a bit, his swing was quicker and produced line drives, mainly to the pull side. Additionally, he ran a 7.38 60 and had an exit velo of 73-mph.
  

Dylan MacKay, LHP/OF, Blue Springs HS, Class of 2016:
The small bodied 5-foot-8, 125-pound MacKay is a two way player. On the mound, the left-handed thrower comes from a high 3/4 arm slot with short arm action and had good movement on all his pitches. His fastball sat 66-67, topping at 68-mph with some arm side run and sink action, consistently thrown for a strike. He also showed a early breaking 11-to-5 curve ball that stayed down in the zone and a 57-58 mph change up with arm side action. In the outfield, MacKay gave max effort on all balls hit to him and showed to be an effective fielder. He throws were accurate, with a top throw of 66-mph. Offensively; MacKay has a long, uphill swing and showed the ability to make consistent contact. He also ran a 7.45 60 and had an exit velo of 64-mph.

 

Derek Ruff, MIF/OF, Lee’s Summit HS, Class of 2014:
Ruff is a 5-foot-9, 150-pound player who showed versatility as an outfielder and infielder, as well as showing some surprising pop at the plate for a player of his size. In the outfield, Ruff moves well to the ball, fielding the ball in good position to throw to his target, with a clean transfer and accurate throws on a line (72-mph). As a shortstop, Ruff showed to be a sure handed fielder with range to his forehand side and accurate throws across the diamond. Offensively, Ruff takes a short path to the ball with a level, line drive producing swing and showing the ability to effectively hit to all fields. Additionally, Ruff ran a 7.16 60 and had a top exit velo of 78-mph.

 

Bryce Thompson, OF, Park Hill South HS, Class of 2013:
Thompson is a 5-foot-8, 170-pound left handed hitter with a strong lower half. At the plate, Thompson takes an uphill path to the ball, with extension through contact and the ability to pull the ball. His hands dropped at times in his load, when they came to the ball he was very consistent. He did record the top exit velo of 80-mph. In the outfield, Thompson has short arm action and recorded a top throw of 65-mph. Thompson also ran a 7.39 60.

 

Joseph Tieman, LHP/1B, St. Joseph Central HS, Class of 2015:
Tieman is a lanky 6-foot, 165-pound two-way player. On the mound, the left handed thrower comes from a 3/4  arm slot with long arm action and some rhythm on the mound. His fastball was thrown in the 71-74 with late arm side run and sink action. His breaking ball  (61-64-mph) was thrown at near fastball arm speed consistently for a strike with sharp break, while his change up (66-67 mph) showed some arm side run and sink while being kept down in the zone. At the plate, the left handed hitter has a repeatable short, compact swing, extension through contact and the ability to hit the ball to all fields. Tieman also ran a 7.50 60 and had an exit velo of 72-mph.

 

Roman Viar, 3B, Lee’s Summit North HS, Class of 2013:
Viar is a solidly built 5-foot-9, 190-pound third baseman. At the plate, Viar is very quiet in the box with a smooth load and a short compact swing. With good use of his lower half, Viar produces good bat speed with level extension allowing him to dive the ball gap to gap. Viar has some power potential in his swing. In the field, Viar has a good approach to the ball, showing to be a sure handed fielder while moving well to the ball with accurate throws across the diamond (65-68 mph). Viar ran a 7.25 60 and had an exit velo of 78-mph.

 

Logan Wiley, RHP/OF, Kickapoo HS, Class of 2015:
Wiley is a 6-foot, 150-pound two way player who has a high ceiling as he continues to fill out his frame. On the mound, Wiley comes from a high 3/4 arm slot with quick arm speed and some rhythm, showing repeatable mechanics. His fastball sat 80-81 mph, topping at 83-mph with hard cut action. He also showed a sharp 11-to-5 breaking ball (67-69) with near fastball arm speed and a 71-74 mph change up with arm side run and down in the zone.  Wiley also showed to be an effective player in the outfield, taking good routes to the ball and playing through with strong accurate throws in the 81-83 mph range. At the plate, Wiley showed fast bat speed and takes an uphill path to the ball, showing the ability to pull. Wiley ran a 7.37 60 and had a top exit velo of 75-mph.

 

Matthew Zembraski, C, Warrensburg HS, Class of 2014:
Zembraski is a switch hitting 5-foot-11, 160-pound catcher who saw his stock rise in the class of 2014 with his performance. Behind the plate, Zembraski has a good base and showd the ability to stick balls in all parts of the zone. He also showed good footwork and a quick transfer, with pop times in the 1.98-2.12 range on the bag. During bullpen sessions, he showed quick instincts and body control while blocking. At the plate, from the right side, Zembraski has a balanced stance with quick hands and a short quick swing that produced gap to gap line drives. From the left side of the plate, he showed good rhythm and the ability to drive the ball to the right side with backspin carry. Zembraski also showed some athleticism, with an event best 6.81 60.
