Southwest Suburban Red

No. 1 Lincoln-Way North 14, Thornridge 0
The top-ranked Phoenix soared past the Falcons in five innings for their 23rd consecutive victory on Thursday. Lincoln-Way North (23-0) scored nine runs in the third to put this one away early. Josh Reid had three hits, including a double and plated three Phoenix runs. Dave Korosic hammered a bases clearing double and Matt Murray and St. Joseph College-bound SS Josh Handzik each had two RBI. RHP Steve Hammer (1-0) and LHP Jon Van Artsten combined for a one-hitter.   

Stagg 11, Thornton 3
Stagg (9-14; 5-4) rolled behind a complete-game effort from Steve Kubiak (2-2) and a 3-for-3 day from Charger Pete Angelos who scored and drove home a run.

West Suburban Crossover

No. 9 Downers Grove South 7, No. 14 Downers Grove North 3
Downers Grove South (21-3) won “The Battle of Downers Grove,” defeating cross-town rival Downers Grove North (16-4) on Thursday. Junior RHP Zac Taylor pitched and hit the Mustangs past the Trojans. Taylor allowed one run and three hits in his stellar five–inning performance on the mound to pick up the win. With his bat, Taylor had three hits, including a double and drove home two Mustang runs. University of Iowa-bound Zack Burdi added two hits, including a double and had an RBI.

Big 12

Normal West 3, Decatur Eisenhower 2
Normal West (19-3; 6-0) won for its 14th consecutive time in nine windy, rainy innings on Thursday. Sophomore Reid Birlingmair doubled home Jake Evans with the walk-off winner that started a party on the West Side of Normal Thursday night. Normal West has outscored its six Big 12 opponents by a 57-4 margin. Circle Tuesday May 7 on your calendar for the Big 12 Game of the Year between the 5th ranked Wildcats and the ranked Purple Raiders of Bloomington. Be on the West Side of Normal at 4:30. Yours truly will be there, too.  

Bloomington 2, Pekin 0
Bloomington (19-7; 6-0 Big 12) blanked the Dragons behind a shutout from sophomore Tyler Workman (4-2). It was junior Trey Packard Day for the Purple Raiders; as the vintage Packard, had two hits and plated both Purple Raider runs.

Central Suburban North

Deerfield 7, Maine East 1
Deerfield (14-6; 7-3) was led by starting and winning pitcher Xander Horowitz on Thursday. Horwitz blanked the Blue Demons for six innings, allowing only four hits to pick up the win and helped himself at the plate with an RBI double. Warrior Andy Fisher continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-2 day at the plate with an RBI.

Central Suburban South

Niles West 6, No. 16 Glenbrook South 2
Niles West (10-5; 5-4) shocked 16th-ranked Glenbrook South (16-3; 8-2). Senior RHP Kyle Colletta fired a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts for Niles West. Colletta allowed one earned run. Colletta’s batterymate C Seth Rosenberg was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Adam Olen was 2-for-2 and Colletta helped himself at the plate with two singles and an RBI. Colletta improves to 3-2 with a 0.61 ERA.

New Trier 7, Maine South 1  
New Trier (9-10-1; 5-5) stunned Maine South (12-6; 7-3) on Thursday behind a stellar six inning performance from starting and winning pitcher Drew Fischer. Fischer allowed a run on five hits striking out nine Hawk hitters. Senior Frank Nicholas led the Trevian attack with two hits including a double and an RBI. Ernie Roth, Matt Blanchard and Drew Lamotte all singled and drove home a Trevian run.  

Evanston 7, Waukegan 3
Evanston (16-7; 6-3) rolled past Waukegan and with losses to Glenbrook South and Maine South, pulled within a game of the CSL-South lead. Wildkit starting and winning pitcher Miles Shatkin allowed two hits and no earned runs in his six-inning gem. Kevin Kleschen led the ‘Kit attack with a single and two RBI. C Joe Franke chipped in with a pair of doubles.  

DuPage Valley

No. 15 Wheaton North 2, No. 9 Naperville Central 2 (suspended bottom 5)
Wheaton North (17-3; 9-2) Naperville Central (14-5; 9-3)  

Naperville North 5, West Aurora 3
Naperville North (12-7; 8-5) only had four hits but they were enough as the Huskies slipped past the Blackhawks in six-innings on Thursday. Huskie RHP Brendan Herbstritt scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs to pick up the win. John Sagen and Carson Brown led the Huskie attack with a double and an RBI each.

Fox Valley Fox

Grayslake North 15, Woodstock 8
Fox Valley Fox leader Grayslake North (13-4; 8-3) outslugged Woodstock on Thursday.

Grayslake Central 6, Crystal Lake Central 4
Grayslake Central (17-9; 8-4) defeated the Tigers in Crystal Lake on Thursday. Ram sophomore Jay Hoffman had three singles and scored two runs to lead the Ram attack. Senior Ryan Fontana singled doubled and scored a run while senior Kyle Balling and junior Matt Loeffl each singled and had an RBI for the Rams.  

Fox Valley Valley

Cary-Grove 4, McHenry 0
Cary-Grove (16-5; 11-3) blanked McHenry (15-10; 8-5 ) behind a four-hit shutout from Brandon McCumber. McCumber struck out five and did not walk a batter. McCumber helped himself with two hits including a double and drove home the only run he would need. Matt Sutherland and Patrick Serowka each singled and drove in a Trojan run.

Interstate 8 Crossovers

Herscher 11, Sandwich 1
Herscher (19-2-2) took a bite out of Sandwich, scoring six times in the bottom of the sixth to put an end to the proceedings in Herscher. Tiger senior C Evan Regez singled doubled and drove home a pair of runs while Kyle Burton scored three times and added a Tiger RBI for the day. Braden Muhlstadt singled tripled and plated a Tiger run. RHP Chase Boydston fired a two-hitter with nine punch-outs to pick up the victory.

Mid-Suburban East

Rolling Meadows 12, Wheeling 1
Rolling Meadows (10-8-1; 8-1) crushed Wheeling in 4 ½ innings on Thursday. Mustang RHP Jack Milas fired a five hitter at the Wildcats while Dan Hendricks singled doubled tripled and drove home four Mustang runs. Dan Hendrickson singled doubled tripled and drove home three runs.

Mid-Suburban Crossover

Palatine 8, Hersey 5
Palatine (12-8-1 7-2 West) cruised past Hersey to pull within one-game of MSL-West leader Barrington (14-8; 8-1). Red-hot Zach Serna had two more hits scored two runs and drove home a pair of Pirate runs. Neal Ori crushed a pair of doubles and had two RBI while Matt Saltess chipped in with a 3-for-3 game with two doubles. RHP Jarrod Juskiewicz (2-3) fired 4 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

N. Illinois Big 12 East

Morris 9, Rochelle 0
Morris (18-6; 10-2) blanked the Hubs behind a three-hit shutout by senior RHP Trevor Lines (2-0). Lines was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove home the only run he would need for the NIB-12E leaders.

Kaneland 4, Sycamore 2
Kaneland (9-11; 7-5) defeated Sycamore behind Knight RHP Connor Thorson, who allowed two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win for Kaneland. Knight closer RHP Joe Komel retired the last two Spartan hitters to save the game for Thorson. Thorson’s batterymate C and Tyler Carlson each singled and plated a Knight run. Komel added a double and a pair of RBI for the Knights.

South Suburban Crossovers

Lemont 8, Richards 5
Lemont (13-5; 11-1 Blue) rolled past Richards behind LSU-recruit junior C Mike Papierski, who had three hits including a double and drove home three Indian runs. Indian leadoffman Marc Tokarski was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. LHP Cody Caballero improved to 5-1 on the season for two-time defending champion SSC-Blue leaders.

Southwest Prairie

Romeoville 4, No. 19 Plainfield South 0
Romeoville (10-13; 2-11) surprised 19th-ranked Plainfield South (16-4; 11-2) behind a three-hit shutout from Spartan staring and winning pitcher Thomas Goodyear. Raul Ibarra doubled and drove home three big Spartan runs. The three game-winning ribbies for Ibarra were his first three RBI of the season.

Minooka 6, Oswego 5
Minooka (15-7; 11-3) swept away Oswego in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the eighth in Minooka. Junior Neal Tyrell doubled home Nick Bell with the walk-off winner that sent the Indian fans dancing onto Wabena Road. With the win, the rampaging Indians pull within ½ game of SWPC leader Plainfield South.

Southwest Suburban Blue

Lockport 5, Bolingbrook 0
Lockport (15-6; 6-3) blanked the Brook behind a combined one-hitter from RHP Eric Duzan (3-1) and RHP Colt Ryan. Duzan fanned eight Raider hitters and Ryan ended the game with a flourish striking out the final Raider hitter to give Duzan the win. Senior 3B Doug Matthews and Austin Kolmodin each singled and drove home a Porter run.  

No. 23 Joliet West 2, Lincoln-Way Central 1
Joliet West (14-7; 6-3) could only muster three hits off L-W Central junior ace Brad Bass. Tiger RHP Quinn Ahern (3-1) out-dueled the top-ranked Bass by firing a six-hitter at the Knights with seven strikeouts. Bass fired a three-hitter allowing two runs and stuck out nine. Lincoln-Way Central (12-8; 6-3) falls into a first-place tie with West and Lockport in the topsy-turvy Southwestern Blue.

Sandburg 2, Joliet Central 0
Sandburg (15-5; 5-4) edged a feisty Steelmen squad in eight exciting innings on Thursday. University of Michigan-bound RHP Brain Pall allowed one Steelmen hit with 11 strikeouts. In the top of the eighth Adam Zehme double home the first run of the game and he scored on an RBI single from Alec Martinez.

Homewood-Flossmoor 9, No. 6 Lincoln-Way East 8
In a game where both teams combined for nine errors, Homewood-Flossmoor (10-9; 4-3) sent 6th ranked Lincoln-Way East (15-6; 5-4) to its fourth consecutive defeat. H-F had only four hits, receiving eight bases on balls from the charitable Griffin pitching staff. The Vikings won the game in the top of the eighth on a suicide squeeze bunt from Mickey Kendrick, plating junior Derrion Thomas with the game-winner. Viking senior Teddy Romas slammed the door on the Griffins in the bottom of the eighth to nail down the win.

Southwestern

O’ Fallon 6, Granite City 4
O’ Fallon (17-8; 8-2) scored three times in the top of the seventh to rally past the Warriors on Thursday. Trailing 4-1 after two innings, the game was an uphill struggle for the three-time defending Southwestern Conference champs. Panther junior Colin Holton doubled tripled scored three runs and drove home one to lead the O’Fallon attack. Senior 3B Tanner Hudson continued his hot hitting with single double and drove home two Panther runs.

Belleville East 5, No. 20 Edwardsville 1
Belleville East (15-8; 7-3) rolled past Edwardsville (17-9; 7-4) behind a seven-hitter from senior Sam Bassett (3-2). Senior Anthony Garza hammered a three-run shot to highlight the four-run Lancer second to put this in the win column for East.

Collinsville 9, Alton 2
Collinsville (14-6; 6-4) crushed Alton (17-8; 2-9) behind senior Paul Seuss (3-1), who fired a six-hitter at the Redbirds with seven strikeouts. Kahok junior Kyle Reeves had a pair of singles and drove home two Kahok runs.

Suburban Christian Crossovers

Chicago Christian 3, Aurora Christian 2
Chicago Christian (23-3; 12-2 Gold) took over the top-spot in the SCC-Gold by defeating Aurora Christian (9-12; 3-9) on Thursday. The Knights could only get one hit off  University of Iowa-bound Eagle ace JT Baksha (3-3) in their 3-run second inning. Wally Findysz’s ripped an RBI double for the only CC hit.

Marmion 5, Aurora Central Catholic 3

Upstate 8 Valley

Waubonsie Valley 7, Bartlett 0
Waubonsie Valley (12-7; 10-4) vaulted into first-place in the U8C Valley with a white-washing of Bartlett (12-7; 11-7) on Thursday in five innings. Warrior RHP Ty Hasper fired a two-hit shutout at the Hawks. CJ Lee, Ben Vietri and Hasper each drove home a pair of runs for the U8C-Valley leaders.
