Division III Team Of The Week: Archbold

ARCHBOLD - It was a week that Archbold coach Dick Selgo admits brought some concern.

“The past week was a real challenge for us,” admitted Selgo, whose team faced NWOAL co-favorite Bryan before meeting a Swanton team that began the year 6-0. A trip to Fifth Third Field in Toledo capped off the week against Division I 25th-ranked Perrysburg.

“Going in I was a little nervous, but we came through it well,” Selgo said.

VERY well might describe it better … and the three-game sweep has Archbold being honored as the Prep Baseball Report Division III Team of the Week..

A 5-3 win over Bryan, an 11-3 victory over Swanton and an 11-0 blanking of Perrysburg brought Archbold’s record to 9-1 on the season as well as the top spot in this week’s D-III state rankings.

“I was very happy the way we hit the ball off (Benny) Roebuck (of Bryan),” Selgo said of the junior Kent State commit. “We got six hits off him.

“The Swanton game was much closer than the final score, we got five runs in the bottom of the sixth. They’re a very good team.

“To top the week off we beat Perryburg at Fifth Third,” Selgo continued. “We’d played there before a couple times but none of the current players had played there. It was a great experience. It raised our level of play.”

That is something opponents don’t want to hear about the top-ranked team in the state in D-III.

“Our pitching has been very good,” Selgo noted. “Rigo Ramos has been highly touted. He’s really matured and met all expectations so far.”

The Bowling Green commit, a 6-5 175-pound left-hander ranked 70th in Ohio’s senior class, has been outstanding thus far. On Monday of this week, Ramos fanned 17 in a 6-0 NWOAL win over Evergreen.

Aiden Warncke, a senior left-hander, is the number two hurler for the Blue Streaks with Cory Erbskorn bringing depth along with senior relief pitcher TJ Rice.

“We were hoping to have balance this year with pitching, defense and hitting and we’ve been able to do that,” the 11th-year head coach at Archbold said. “It’s helped us get off to a good start.”

But Selgo warned, it is only mid-April.

“We’re playing up to our capabilities but we know there are a lot of challenges left,” Selgo said. “It only takes one bad game to turn a season around. It’s about staying hungry and staying humble.”

A team batting average of .404, helped out by 18 hits in the win over Perrysburg, has been vital. Kade Kern (Video), an Ohio State commit ranked 15th among Ohio juniors, provides the biggest bat in a lineup also featuring players like shortstop Jeron Williams, third baseman Rice and outfielder Mitch Grosjean.

“Right through the lineup everyone has helped out,” noted Selgo, whose team batting leader is Erbskorn, a Trine University signee with a .600 average. “We have seven guys hitting over .400. These guys are experienced players and are hard workers. They take it serious. They have a passion for the game and stay in the cages as long as needed.

“For them it’s about focusing each game, each at-bat and being ready on defense. Our pitching has been so dominant, the defense has not been tested. But they need to stay on their toes and be ready.”

The challenges continue after improving to 10-1 on Monday with the win over Evergreen. The Blue Streaks are at unbeaten Bowling Green, the second-ranked D-II team in Ohio, today before traveling to Delta Thursday and hosting Edon on Saturday.

“When you have kids that play with a passion, have good attitudes and care more about the team than themselves, it makes coaching a lot of fun,” Selgo concluded.
