WILMETTE, IL – The Evanston Wilkits won their third sectional title in the program’s long history on Saturday, taking down rival New Trier 3-2 to capture the Wilmette Sectional title.

Junior RHP Russel Snapp held the Trevians at bay for most of the contest. New Trier was unable to score until the bottom of the seventh when Logan Wible hit a two run homer to claw within one. Snapp allowed just two hits through his first six innings of work, striking out two.

Defensive miscues gave both teams their opportunities but it was the Wildkits who were able to capitalize. Evanston scored two in the second inning, getting things started by reaching on an error. James Allen added an RBI single, shortly followed by an RBI double off the bat of Mackenzie O’Neil.

The 2-0 lead held through five and in the sixth Jackson Mihevc added what proved to be a much needed insurance run. Mihevc got a fastball on the inner half from Trevian reliever Ben Brecht and cleared the left field fence for a solo shot giving Evanston a 3-0 lead.

With the Evanston contingent on their feet in the bottom of seventh, Logan Wible delayed the celebration momentarily, lifting a two-run shot to left pulling New Trier within one, 3-2. However, the newly found life in the Trevian dugout was short lived as Snapp got the next batter to fly out to left, initiating the dog pile of ‘Kits.

Evanston will head to the Super Sectionals with a record of 22-13-1 and will face off with a South Elgin team carrying at 23-10 record.  The two teams will collide at 6:30 PM Monday, June 9 at the Schaumburg Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg, IL.
