Friday Night Lights Burn Bright at Basic

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

HENDERSON, NV – On a chilly Friday night, the Wolves of Martin Luther King High School in Southern California visited the Southern Nevada Blue Sox of Basic High School.  Shane Spencer (2019) would toe the rubber for the Blue Sox as he did last Friday night. Spencer would yield a run in the top half of the first after surrendering a leadoff triple, but that would be all the Wolves would get from him.  His fastball ranged from 85-89.  Spencer displays consistent life and area command of his fastball, but early, he would center some fastballs that MLK would take advantage of.  Soon after, he would find the edges, settle in and pitch into the 5th inning before being lifted because of a limited pitch count. Spencer would be relieved by Daniel Clayton (2021) and Jaden King (2019). Clayton pitched exclusively with his fastball with steady cut life. King would lift the bulk of the weight pitching the final two innings, giving up just one run.  King’s fastball was 77-80 with occasional down plane.  He featured a curveball with solid spin and occasional depth and feel for a changeup at 72-73.  King’s off speed velocity would lend to a firmer fastball in warmer temperatures. He has projectable body at 6-foot3, 185.   Although Blue Sox pitching would hold the Wolves to just two runs, the story of this night was the offense.

The Blue Sox scored early and often.  The offensive effort was top to bottom and could prove to be potent for a while. With a minimal number of rostered seniors and missing football players Paul Myro and Trace Evans, the Blue Sox rely heavily on juniors like, John Howard Bobo (2020) and Zach Hose (2020) to lead the offense.  Another middle of the order bat on the rise is Hunter Katschke (2021), first baseman. They also have potential table setters like Kyle Turner (2020), Dalton Miller (2020) and Alex Santiaguin (2022).  Basic could be very dangerous come spring time with a host of young players gaining valuable game experience this fall.
