Future Trials West: 2019 & 2020 Analysis

The Future Trials West took place on July 6th, 2016. Over 30 prospects from around  Maryland and around the region took part in the event in front of the PBR Maryland staff and colleges. Today we break down the 2019 and 2020 grads from the event.

John Carter RHP Smithsburg 2020
Long lanky frame with room to grow at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds. Controlled build up delivery throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Has longer loose arm action. Could get ore lower half involvement.  Lands slightly toward first base side. Fastball has some sink to the pitch up to 77 mph. Slows down on change up with some fade on the pitch at 63 mph.

Mason Gelwicks OF/RHP Williamsport 2019
Compact Frame at 5-foot-5, 135-pounds. Hits from a balanced set up at the plate. Short quick load to hitting position. Has a level swing path. Gets on front foot a bit. Exit velocity of 78 mph. Has active feet in the outfield. Sound hands and clean exchange. Throws from a ¾ arm slot uphill. Outfield velocity of 64 mph…Controlled delivery. Long arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Lands square to the plate and could get more lower half involvement. Fastball has slight movement up to 70 mph. Breaking ball has nice 11/5 action on the pitch with near fastball arm speed. Changeup has fade on the pitch and arm sped slows down slightly on the pitch.

Joshua Golden RHP/C Hancock 2019
Projectable athletic frame at 6-foot, 150-pounds. Hits from a balanced set up with high hands. Has a longer swing path and stays inside the ball through contact. Shows some balance and extension through contact…Projects well on the mound. Slower build up delivery and does a nice job staying on top of ball and working downhill with release. Throws from a high ¾ arm angle with longer arm action and creates quick arm speed through release. Get some lower half and could get more to generate more velo. Fastball has sink to the pitch up to 79 mph. Showed nice command of the pitch down in the zone. Breaking ball has short action on the pitch with later break at 68 mph. Pitch shows some potential to be a power type pitch.

Will Hertel 1B Saint James 2020
Solid frame at 5-foot-8, 165-pounds. Hits from a balanced, slightly open setup. Short simple load to hitting position. Level swign path direct to eh baseball and creates some bat speed. Gets nice extension through contact at times, could be more consistent at it. Gets some backside involved and displays some rhythm throughout. Has active feet in the infield. Sound actions with a clean exchange. Shorter arm action in the infield throwing from a ¾ arm slot.

Austin Martin C Smithsburg 2019
Strong young frame at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds. Hits from an athletic, slightly open set up. Strong hands at the plate. Level swing path with the ability to elevate the baseball. Shows bat speed and some rhythm. Gets lower half to work and could get better lower half involvement to stay on ball. Active feet in the infield, sound actions. Slightly stiff. Soft hands behind the plate, slightly open stance receiving. Clean hands and exchange throwing with a short arm action to second. Pop Time in the 2.30-2.37 range. 88 mph exit velocity.

Spencer McNamee RHP/OF Saint James 2019
Compact athletic frame at 5-foot-7, 148-pounds. Hits from an athletic set up. Short simple load to hitting position. Short swign path with some extension. Quick hands and spray type hitter. Active feet in the outfield. Moves well with clean exchange and quick short arm action. Throws from a ¾ arm slot at 78 mph. Exit velocity of 79 mph and ran a 7.06 60-yard dash…Controlled, smooth delivery. Has a free arm action that works quick through release from a ¾ arm slot. Lands square and finishes athletic to the plate. Could get more back side drive. Fastball is straight with slight sink up to 82 mph. Breaking ball has short action on the pitch with 11/5 shape. Change up shows fade on the pitch and slight sink.  Keeps near fastball arm speed with both secondary pitches. Solid foundation as overall athlete in the 2019 class and one to monitor as he continues to grow.

Travis Rinker C/OF Georgetown Prep 2019
Projectable frame at 6-foot-2, 187-pounds. Very intriguing prospect in the 2019 class. Hits from a taller athletic set up.  Smooth load to hitting position. Short swing path that gets slightly uphill. Strong hands at plate with potential to get better. Barrelled the ball well with some loud contact during BP session. Soft hands behind the plate receiving from an athletic position. Clean and smooth exchange behind the dish with short arm action and quick release. Pop time ranged from 2.01 – 2.14 during workout. One to keep an eye on in the 2019 class.

Tye Snyder SS Hedgesville (WV) 2019
Compact frame at 5-foot-7, 143-pounds. Hits from a balanced set up. Short small load to hitting position. Has a level swing path to the baseball with average bat speed. Exit velocity of 77 mph. Has balance throughout. Avtive feet in the infield. Solid actions with quick exchange and release. Throws from a ¾ slot with a loose arm action and infield velocity of 65 mph.

Mark Spicher C Saint James 2019
Solid frame at 5-foot-9, 150-pounds. Hits from a balanced set up with smooth short load. Has a short swing path quick to the ball and some extension. Stays inside the ball well and is a spray type hitter. Shows some rhythm and balance. Sticks the ball well behind the plate with a clean exchange and short arm action. Throws are accurate with a pop time in the 2.4-2.5 range. Solid foundation, as he gets stronger should progress.

Brady Weaver C Hedgesville (WV) 2019
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 185-pounds. Hits from an athletic square set up at the plate. Smooth double tap load at the plate. Short swing, quick hands with some extension. Shows nice rhythm throughout and balance in swing. Has clean exchange behind the plate with short arm action. Slight pause in throwing motion that could get pop time down as he smoothens out. Throws are accurate to the bag. Nice hip control behind plate. Pop times ranged from 2.21-2.28 with a velocity of 71 from behind the dish.
