Game Notes - Boulder City at Mojave

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

North Las Vegas, NV- The Boulder City Eagles made the long drive to Mojave High School to take on the Rattlers on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. ’20 Michael Cianci got the ball for the Rattlers, as he took on Joey Giunta for the Eagles. Both right handers pitched their tails off not giving up an earned run. Boulder City would capitalize on two errors in the top of the second inning scoring a run to break the scoring silence. Cianci would not give up another run until late in the game. Guinta held the Rattlers scoreless, threatened by his opponent, Cianci, who lined a hard single to right in the top of the fourth inning, only to be stranded. Giunta would surrender just one more hit in the fifth inning to Mojave’s Juraun Irby, before exiting the game. '19 Brendan Thorpe (RHP) came on in relief of Guinta and tossed a perfect sixth. The Eagles would take advantage of another Rattler error and add two insurance runs. Thorpe closed out the game combining with Guinta for the shutout.

Scouting Notes

’20 Michael Cianci, RHP/INF (Mojave)

Athletic Build, 5’10 165, Cianci showed solid feel for his fastball and curveball. Primarily a two-pitch guy, his control allowed him to throw both pitches at any time, keeping hitters off balance. His fastball ranged 78-81, while his curveball was 68-70. Cianci showed stamina, pitching a complete game, yielding three unearned runs and holding his velocity throughout. Cianci showed good mound presence in the face of the defensive adversity. At the plate, he showed a smooth left-handed swing. He was on every pitch and displayed natural loft. With his athleticism accompanied by strength and velocity improvement, he might prove to be a legit two-way player.

’19 Brendan Thorpe, RHP (Boulder City)

Stocky, 5’10 180, Thorpe threw two innings in relief. He showed solid control of his fastball, hinging on command out of the windup. His fastball ranged from 84-86, while his curveball was 68-70. Thorpe displayed a bulldog approach, challenging every hitter he faced. Fastball had great command, curveball was effective at times, there is room for improvement. With runners on base he was quick to the plate, however did lose a little command when trying to be too quick. Overall Thorpe was an absolute competitor, could definitely pitch the next level with good stuff to build on.
