GOSHEN — Coming back from an early three-run deficit, Goshen scored five times in third inning and held a Warsaw rally to one run in the seventh.

It all added up to a 7-6 Northern Lakes Conference high school baseball Friday, May 3 at Phend Field.

The RedHawks (7-10, 4-4) trailed 4-1 when they put up their crooked number against the Tigers (5-11, 2-6).

Senior right-hander Austin Cain pitched into the seventh inning.

Sophomore right-hander Reece Fisher got the last three outs to earn the save.

“(Cain) was at 85 (pitches) going into the (seventh) inning,” said Goshen coach J.J. DuBois. “We were keeping him under a 100 for sure. He was the hot arm. He’s my senior and he wanted it. “I told him he’d have a short leash, but he’d get the seventh inning if he wanted it. I knew we had Reece ready and Reece can come close games. I want to put kids in situation where they know we trust them.”

RedHawks senior Braxton Kincaid helped his squad by socking his first home run of the 2019 season and made a diving catch in the sixth inning.

“(Kincaid) works his butt off,” said DuBois. “He’s on the tee all the time. He’s starting to come around which is good to see. Defensively, he’s been like that all year.”

Junior Skylar Reyes was on base three times with two singles and a double and scored two runs while sophomore Colin Turner rapped two hits, including a double, for Goshen.

Ian Glogovsky and Jacob Hutcherson drove in two runs each.

Hutcherson
and Noah Burgh finished with two hits each. Burgh scored two runs for Warsaw.

“We had a lot of hard-hit balls,” said Tigers coach Andy Manes. “At the end of the day, we didn’t string enough of them together.”

Warsaw used two right-handed pitchers — Mason Reber into the third inning and Joey Springer the rest of the way.

In the Tigers seventh, lead-off hitter Burgh was hit by a Cain pitch.

Fisher then replaced Cain on the mound for the RedHawks.

A walk and delayed stolen base put Burgh at third base. He scored Warsaw’s sixth run on Liam Patton’s fielder’s choice.

After Matt Shoemaker’s single, Fisher locked down the save by getting two infield pop-outs.

“I like the way we competed and fought,” said Manes. “We had just one bad inning. “We could have rolled over. The previous game against (Goshen), we really didn’t fight back and we lost 13-3. I appreciated the effort our guys gave the whole game.”

The RedHawks left a runner at second base against Springer in a scoreless sixth.

After a diving grab by Warsaw center fielder Aaron Greene to take a hit away from Fisher, Skylar Reyes singled to center and moved to second on a groundout, but advanced no further.

The Tigers went down 1-2-3 against Cain in a scoreless sixth with a strikeouts and two fly-ball outs, including a diving catch in left by Kincaid.

Goshen stranded one runner against Springer in a
score-free fifth.

Turner belted a two-run double to the fence in center, but was left at second base.

Glogovsky’s lead-off home run on a 1-0 Cain pitch in the fifth pulled Warsaw to within 7-5.

The RedHawks scored one run against Springer in the fourth to push its advantage to 7-4.

Skylar Reyes cracked a one-out double to left and scored on senior Jack Immel’s single to right.

Warsaw turned a double play to abbreviated the rally with a double play as third baseman Glogovsky speared a liner to threw across the diamond to first baseman Hutcherson for a force.

Cain retired the Tigers in order in a scoreless fourth.

Goshen put up five runs credited to Reber in the third to take a 6-4 lead.

Skylar Reyes (walk) scored on junior pinch-hitter Mason Schrock’s bases-loaded walk.

Sophomore Dominick Reyes (walk) tallied a run on senior Bryant Robinson’s squib hit in front of the mound.

Immel (on by error) scored on an outfield error.

The RedHawks picked up two runs on the same play when Turner hit a come-backer to the mound. Schrock beat the throw to the plate and Robinson was right behind him.

Springer relieved Reber with one out and runners on second and third.

Warsaw collected one run against Cain in the third for a 4-1 advantage.

Patton led off with a double to left and trotted home on Hutcherson’s one-out single to center.

A two-out homer by Kincaid against Reber in the second gave Goshen its first run to cut the gap to 3-1.

Kincaid pulled the first pitch he saw over the right field fence.

The
next two batters — Turner (single to left) and Cain (on base by error) reached but were left on base.

The Tigers tallied one run in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

Alex Light drew a lead-off walk, went to second base on Gage Lyons’ walk and third base on Burgh’s single to center.

A sacrifice fly to center by Glogovsky plated Light. On the same play, Lyon got caught between bases and was out on back end of a double play — center fielder Robinson to senior first baseman Joseph Good to third baseman Dominick Reyes.

Goshen put two runners on but did not score against Reber in the bottom of first.

With one out, Skylar Reyes singled to right and brother Dominick Reyes walked.

Reber got out of the jam by coaxing an inning-ending double play —third baseman Glogovsky to first baseman Hutcherson.

Warsaw produced two runs Cain in the top of the first.

Burgh smacked a single to left, moved to second base on a walk, third base on a wild pitch and scored on Shoemaker’s fielder’s choice.

Glogovsky walked, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and third base on the fielder’s choice and crossed the plate on Hutcherson’s groundout.
