Prep Baseball Report

Grant Malott, No. 29 in 2014, Talks about committing to WKU

Grant MalottPBR: Why did you choose Western Kentucky?

I loved everything about WKU. It’s a great academic school with a beautiful campus. They have a highly competitive baseball program in the Sun Belt Conference. I really like that I'll get to play in a warm weather conference. The coaches all seem really involved with each player individually.

PBR: Where did WKU first see you compete?

They first saw me play at the 16U WWBA at East Cobb (which we won).

PBR: What other schools did you consider?

Other schools that I considered were Ole Miss, IU, Indiana State, and Virginia Tech. I just felt at home when I was on campus at Western.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play during your first year on campus?

The coaches are expecting me to come down my first year and compete for a starting job in the outfield and help out on the mound. I think a lot of that will be up to me and how hard I work between now and then.

PBR: You play for the Indiana Prospects during the summer, how did playing for them help you as a baseball player?

Playing for the Prospects has given me great college exposure by traveling all over and helping to get my name out. We played 3 weeks in East Cobb, a week in Fort Myers, and a couple tourneys in Ohio including one that we won at Midland. Playing against the best competition definitely has made me a better player and has given me the confidence that I can play at a high level.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

The biggest baseball influences in my life would be my dad and my grandpa. My dad hits and long tosses with me every day and helps me improve my game, and my grandpa is always giving me tips and is at every one of my games.

PBR: Heading into your junior year at New Castle what are your goals individually and as a team?

My Individual goals are to always be a positive influence and lead by example. I want help the underclassmen become better ball players. As a team we will be stronger on the mound than we were last year and we will do everything possible to win the Sectional Championship and go deep into the tournament.

PBR: What aspect of your game do you believe needs the most improvement?

Pitching consistency and throwing first pitch strikes. Also, I'm always working to get faster and stronger.

PBR: Have you decided on a major, or narrowed it down?

I am planning to major in Kinesiology. WKU has a great Kinesiology department. I really enjoy sports science and learning about athletic development.
