Highlights and Results from District Play

Through a cold and wet regular season, Missouri high school baseball has emerged to baseball weather with District play beginning on Saturday and continuing through Thursday.

All of the favorites remain, but as the field keeps shrinking, teams are looking for that hot streak and upsets of the perennial powerhouse teams.

Here is a quick look at game results and matchups.

Saturday:

Defending Class 4 state champions Rockwood Summit fell in the opening round of district play to a Lafayette team who has looked hot as of late..

Monday:
Class 5:
Seckman defeated Jackson to be the first Class 5 district champions of 2012. They advance to face the winner of the Vianney/Oakville championship game.

Parkway North keeps grinding their way to wins, earning a hard fought win against Parkway Central 3-2. This team takes advantage of mistakes and as they have all season long, finds a way to capitalize on them. North will face CBC for the District 4 championship Wednesday in what should be one of the better district championship games. Expect to see ace Joe Hope to the rubber for North.

Marquette and Eureka will face off for the District 3 championship, in what should be a very competitive game against two sound teams.  Both teams have the makings of a team to get hot at the right time to make a late playoff run. Marquette is 2-0 against Eureka this season.

Ladue and SLUH play for the District 5 championship game. This is always a very competitive game, especially when Rob Ewald and Brian Howard take the mound. Ladue got the better of SLUH earlier this spring.

Camdenton upset Helias in District 9, and will face off against Rock Bridge Wednesday at 6:00.

In District 12, Neosho knocked off Carthage. Trey Turner hit a seventh inning grand slam and struck out seven in four inning of work for the upset. Neosho will take on Willard at 6:00pm today for the district championship.

Rockhurst and Lee’s Summit West will play today at 7:30pm for the District 13 championship. West earned a hard earned extra inning win against Raymore-Peculiar to set up a rematch in which Rockhurst won the first meeting.

Watch out for Liberty, they are hitting their stride as they advance to the District 15 championship. They will face a tough Ft. Osage squad.

Class 4
Notre Dame and Sikeston will renew their rivalry for the third time this season, with a District 1 championship on the line. This will be the rubber match and should be a very competitive game.

In District 4, Westminster continues to steamroll their competition, and will face St. Francis, with the winner advancing to Sectionals.

Logan-Rogersville and Mt. Vernon will face off today at 5:30pm in the District 10 championship game. Logan-Rogersville continues to look like a championship contender.

As expected based on recent history, Savannah finds themselves in a district championship game, and will face Smithville to advance.

Class 3:
Malden scored a quick 10-0 win over Doniphan, and will face Central at 2:00pm today for the District 1 championship. The winner of this game will advance to play the District 2 winner, tough teams in Clearwater and Scott City.

In District 6, Valley Park was upset by Lutheran St. Peters in the semi-finals and will square off against Christian HS for the district championship.

District 7 crowned Palmyra as the district championship, shutting out Bowling Green to advance to sectionals. They will face the winner of the District 9 championship game between Hallsville and Wright City.

One of the Class 3 favorites, Springfield Catholic, mowed over Houston 10-0 and will face Ava in the District 10 championship game.

In District 11, Clever and Forsyth both won their semifinal game and will face each other in the championship game. This has the makings of one of the top playoff games, and the winner will be another favorite to advance deep.

District 14 will hold their semi-final games today with Holden playing Barstow and Summit Christian vs. Sherwood. If Holden and Summit each win to face each other, the winner would be looked upon as another potential favorite to make the Final Four.

Class 2:
District 2 Neeleyville improved to 20-2 after an 11-0 win, and will face East Carter this afternoon.

Class 2 favorite Valle Catholic defeated Kingston 3-1, and will face Bismark, who beat up on St. Vincent 13-3 for the District 4 championship.

In District 10, a pair of semi-final matchups highlights the schedule. 20-3 Dora will face Norwood, who was a Class 1 Final Four participant in 2012. In the other matchup, Hartville and Cabool will face off. The winner this district’s championship has the potential to make it to the Final Four

Class 1:
Oran will take on Oak Ridge in the District 2 championship game today. Oran is looking to return to the Final Four and is one of the Class 1 favorites to win it all.

Sturgeon will take on Madison in the District 11 semi-finals, and the winner will take on either Community or Silex. Sturgeon was a Class 1 Final Four team last year and look like they can make it back again in 2013.

In District 14, defending Class 1 champions will take on Glasgow in the semi-finals. Wellington and Sweet Springs make up the other half of this district’s games for today.
