South Carolina - Initial 2019 Rankings

Eddie Tisdale
Scouting Director - South Carolina

With the summer circuit behind us and the fall circuit coming to a close, the 2019 class has now had plenty of time to see their stock rise and fall as they set their sites on their senior seasons. Since our launch in June, PBR South Carolina scouts have been on the road taking in showcase games and tournaments, American Legion games, & hosting our own events to help us identify and showcase players from across the state.

Our initial rankings will take a look at the top 75 players from across the state. As the season gets closer and the rankings are expanded expect players to rise and fall as well as new players to be added to this initial ranking.

2019 Top Prospect Spotlights

Geoffrey Gilbert (LHP/1B, Bishop England, Clemson) headlines the initial ranking, the 2018 Gatorade Player of the Year was nothing short of dominate across the board in leading Bishop England to the 2018 3A state title. He compiled a 10-0 record with 93 K's in 66.1 innings with a 0.22 ERA. At the plate Gilbert hit .333 with 27 RBI, 23 runs, and 3 home runs. The 6 foot 2, 200 lb southpaw continued to have an outstanding 2018 with the Evoshield Canes National 2018 team as well as an appearance in the East Coast Pro Showcase.

Jax Cash (C/RHP, Spartanburg/IMG Academy, South Carolina) has transferred to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. The former #2 player in SC can still be found in our PBR National Rankings and will soon be an addition to the FL State rankings. The physical 6 foot 4, 205 lb catcher/RHP has put up some impressive numbers this summer recording exit velos over 100 mph, pop times under 1.85, and pitching velocities as high as 92 mph.

Kirby Connell (LHP, Blacksburg, Tennessee) is a familiar PBR face in a new place. The former Team Missouri PBR Future Games player relocated to Blacksburg, SC during the 2017-2018 school year and immediately made his presence known. Connell captured the SCBCA 2A Player of the Year honor and continued that success through the summer circuit putting together a fantastic campaign for the Upstate Mavericks organization. The FB was up to 88 early in the summer and his command of the fastball and feel for a 2/8 breaking ball with sharp/late action gives him some of the best pitchability in the 2019 class.

RJ Dantin (LHP, Spartanburg, South Carolina) is a 6 foot 3 high waisted LHP that finds himself at the #7 spot in the initial rankings. Dantin put together an impressive JR year compiling a 7-1 record for the Spartanburg Vikings that saw him amass 78 K's and 0.78 ERA. The velocity has been up to 89 and was consistent at 86-88 complimented by a 70-74 mph breaking ball at the SA Border Battle. The controlled delivery is easily repeated and the lengthy frame will allow for future player development.

Will Smith (RHP, Conway, Coastal Carolina) has seen his stock skyrocket over the summer. The RHP capped a great summer effort with a 12 strike out performance for the Evoshield Canes National team at the Wilson Premier Classic. He has shown the ability to repeat his up tempo delivery and command his fastball to both sides of the plate. Smith's FB has been 89-91 and as high as 93 this summer. He compliments it with a tight slider that has shown late depth at times in upper 70's.

Ty Good (RHP, South Pointe, College of Charleston) finds himself in the initial top 10. The two time All-State player and Region 3-4A Player of the Year posted a 7-1 record and struck out 94 batters in 50 innings of work for the Stallions last season. Good, who played for the Dirtbags organization over the summer, is a tremendous athlete with tons of upside. The fastball has been up to 88 and a two tiered breaking ball is used effectively. Control has been erratic at times but not enough to warrant concern moving forward.
