Vinny Donato, 1B, Mayfield HS, Class of 2017

PBR: Why did you choose Youngstown State?

Donato: I chose Youngstown State University because it is a great program that not only cares about your development as a baseball player, but also your development as a person. Also there emphasis on academics played a key role in why I decided Youngstown State University, and the fact that it was close to home where my family and friends can come watch me play was very important to me.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Donato: I was in contact with a couple of MAC and OVC schools.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you and how did your relationship develop?

Donato: Coach Neal first saw me at an Agona Showcase and our relationship developed through emails. He also came out to see me at another showcase and did drill work with me.

PBR: How does it feel to be a part of a Division 1 baseball program?

Donato: It feels great, really unbelievable to be honest. It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I have worked extremely hard on my athleticism and game this offseason, and it’s a great feeling to see how it's paid off. I'm excited to see what the future holds, but it is truly an awesome feeling.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?

Donato: I play for the Brownlee Lookouts and my most memorable baseball moment is when I was about 8 years old and I hit my first over the fence home run. From that point on I truly fell in love with the game.

PBR:  What person has the great impact on your baseball career and why?

Donato: Early on my Dad had a great influence on me by teaching me the fundamentals of baseball and learning to love the game. Later on Coach Brownlee was a big influence on me. He is a great coach who believed in me and pushed me be the best player I can be. He was always honest with where I needed to improve in my game and I always respected that aspect of his coaching.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced in Ohio?

Donato: The toughest pitcher I have faced in Ohio has to be Nate Altstadt. Awesome stuff and throws hard.
