Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament - Day 1

Reno, NV – The 31st annual Josh Anderson Memorial Tournament opened up on Wednesday afternoon on Don Weir Field at Peccole Park at the campus of the University of Nevada. The tournament was founded in memory of Joshua L. Anderson. The Joshua L Anderson Memorial Foundation awards scholarships to Northern Nevada students achieving academic excellence and maintaining a high level of community and school activities.

Josh Anderson was a 1991 graduate of Reno High School. He played baseball at Reno High School, Reno Knights American Legion and DeAnza College. Anderson died on June 25, 1992 of Sudden Death Syndrome shortly after pitching in the University of Nevada summer baseball tournament. 

The tournament continues to host teams from across the west coast. The 2019 event will include Yakima, Black Hills, Fairfield, St. John Bosco, Petaluma, Chico, Danville, and Reno. 

Game 1 

Reno Knights (11) vs. Chico Nuts (1)

The Knights defeated the Nuts in a game shortened by the tournament’s 10-run rule. Reno rallied for three runs in the final frame bringing the game to a close. Knight’s starter, ’20 Skylar Hales threw six strong, striking out 5 and allowing just three hits. ’20 Gunner Gouldsmith and ’20 Donovan Ratfield had two hits each.

Game 2

Yakima (3) vs. Petaluma (13)

The Petaluma Leghorns scored 11 times in the final two frames to beat the Yakima Pepsi Pak. The Pak committed five errors in assistance while the Leghorns pounded out 13 hits, led by right fielder, Max Hendron with 3 hits and two RBI. Petaluma second baseman, Garrett Lewis had two hits including a double and 3 RBI.

Game 3

St John Bosco Braves (7) vs. Fairfield Expos (16)

The Braves and Expos traded blows early with each team scoring in the first two innings, resulting in a 7-4 Expos lead.  Fairfield outscored the Braves 9-3 over the final three innings. DJ Scott spurred the Expos offense with a pair of doubles and 4 RBI. Left fielder, Jason Booker chipped in two hits and 3 RBI.

Game 4

Black Hills Bandits (4) vs Danville Hoots (6)

Black Hills took an early lead on the favored Hoots 4-1 after 4.5 innings of play, but the Danville offense would not be held down.  Danville scored 5 unanswered runs over the final 2.5 frames to secure the victory. Blake Anderson was 2 for 4 for the Bandits while Tommy Gavello and Michael O’Hara led the Hoots. Gavello doubled, tripled and O’Hara homered in the winning effort.
