Knights Baseball PBR Day Pitcher Evaluations for 2018 Class

Adam Akin
Director of Scouting

The 2016 Knights Baseball PBR Day took place on Sunday, September 25 at Dave Hall Field on the campus of Columbia State Community College and included a position player workout, followed by bullpens for the pitchers. Players were afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities to the PBR Tennessee staff and college coaches in attendance. The following is our evaluation of every pitcher from the 2018 graduating class that participated in the action.

Caleb Pearson, RHP, Brentwood, 2018
Max FB: 86, FB: 84-86, CB: 72-74, CH: 75-79,
6-foot-2, 180-pound, RHP works quick with very good tempo and fluidity throughout his delivery, begins his motion with a well-timed and fairly high leg lift that brings his hands up a little bit before separating, uses some shoulder tilt and a loaded front side to lead his way toward the plate, strides in line and uses a shorter but loose and aggressive arm action through a high ¾ release point, showed some effort but has a strong and mostly balanced finish.  Fastball was mostly straight but seemed heavy through the zone and showed some occasional and slight run, curveball had 11/5 shape and was very sharp through the zone for strikes, changeup was mostly straight.

Ben Coulthard, RHP/OF, MBA, 2018
Max FB: 85, FB: 83-85, CB: 69-70, CH: 75-77,
6-foot-3, 170-pound, RHP uses a small rocker step and controlled motion to get moving, hands stay together near his chest and still throughout his wind up and leg lift, gets a slight shoulder tilt and uses a quick separation with his hands to create a longer arm action through an over-the-top slot to deliver, doesn’t load up as much as he could but attacks the plate in line, finishes with some effort but stays mostly balanced on his finish.  Fastball was mostly straight but was firm through the zone, curveball showed 11/5 shape and was thrown confidently, changeup had some sink.  Coulthard earned himself a spot on Tennessee’s Border Battle Games team with his performance as a 2-way player.

Patrick Queener, RHP, Brentwood, 2018
Max FB: 84, FB: 78-84, CB: 68-71, CH: 73-74,
6-foot-1, 165-pound, RHP uses a quicker and pretty efficient motion, rocker step and leg lift are up-tempo but in rhythm and keep his core stable and under control, leg lift is pretty high and brings up his hands before separation happens on the way down, front side gets loaded and leads toward the plate with even shoulder height, strides in line but doesn’t get down the mound as far as he could to create leverage, finishes tall and mostly balance after a short arm action comes through a high ¾ slot.  Fastball was mostly straight but was consistent, curveball showed 11/5 to 10/4 shape with gradual movement, changeup was straight with a change of speed.

Connor Patton, RHP/OF, Ravenwood, 2018
Max FB: 81, FB: 79-81, CB: 71-73, CH: 73-76,
6-foot-2, 170-pound, RHP is long and athletic and uses a controlled motion which keeps his upper body very still until he is ready to attack the plate, leg lift is high but seems simple because of his length and balance, gets pretty well loaded at the top and showed some shoulder tilt during the separation of his hands, very tall at the top, stride to the plate stays in line and only finishes slightly toward 1B, long and pretty loose arm action comes through a high ¾ slot.  Fastball stayed mostly straight, curveball had late and affective 11/5 shape, changeup was mostly a change of pace.

Cal Burgett, LHP / OF, Mt. Juliet, 2018
Max FB: 79, FB: 78-79, CB: 62-65, CH: 70-71,
5-foot-10, 155-pound, LHP was very much the same pitcher we have seen in recent events with a little more sharpness and confidence on the mound, uses a slower and controlled motion showed some explosiveness at release, hands go down and smoothly come back up with his leg lift that gets his front side well loaded, stays closed as long as possible and lands slightly closed, gets over front side fine and finishes slightly toward 3B, longer and pretty loose arm action comes through a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball was mostly straight with some slight and occasional run, curveball showed very good 1/7 shape and changeup had sink through the zone.

Tyler Hollingsworth, RHP, Warren County, 2018
Max FB: 78, FB: 76-78, CB: 64-68, CH: 70-74,
6-foot-0, 175-pound, RHP moves athletically and showed a very loose arm, starts his motion slower and builds up to an aggressive finish toward the plate, leg lift is high but doesn’t affect his balance or stability as he is able to keep his hands calm and tucked up near his neck, gets his front side loaded and leads with his hip, got a little shoulder tilt before heading toward the plate, reaches down and back with a long and loose arm action that comes through a high ¾ release point with some whip, generally finishes well-balanced.  Fastball was mostly straight, curveball was okay with 12/6 to 11/5 shape through the zone, changeup had some flight and late fade.

Miller Freeman, RHP/3B, MBA, 2018
Max FB: 78, FB: 77-78, CB: 62-64, CH: 67-68,
6-foot-1, 160-pound, RHP showed a pretty controlled and generic motion, uses a higher leg lift with a raise of his hands, hands come down and separate as he begins his stride toward the plate, shoulders stay mostly level as he uses a longer arm action through a ¾ slot, finishes pretty loose, stride lands closed and pulls him to finish toward 1B.  Fastball showed some hard run through the zone, curveball showed sharp 11/5 to 10/6 shape, changeup had sink and showed some occasional fade, arm angle creates most of this good movement.

Jared Culp, LHP/1B, Karns, 2018
Max FB: 77, FB: 74-77, CB: 66-69, CH: 70-71,
6-foot-3, 175-pound, LHP looked very similar to what we saw from him a couple of months ago at our Underclass games, length and range were even more prevalent at this event, begins his delivery quickly with a lot of movement with his lower body and his hands, leg lift comes up high and in sync with his hands and is able to get his front side mostly closed and loaded, shoulders stay even and uses a shorter arm action through a high ¾ release point that seems a little tight in the middle, strides in line and finishes pretty well balanced. Fastball was mostly straight but thrown for strikes, breaking ball showed 1/7 shape, changeup had some late fade coming into the zone.

Jackson Walker, RHP/OF, Brentwood, 2018
Max FB: 77, FB: 75-77, CB: 64-67, CH: 66-68,
6-foot-2, 145-pound, RHP has a wide-shouldered and lanky build and uses that length to his advantage, starts his motion slower and stays that way until the very end of his release, fairly high leg lift gets his front side mostly closed and loaded, hands stay together near his chest until separation, shoulders stay in line stride toward the plate, finishes mostly balanced.  Fastball was mostly straight, curveball showed some gradual 11/5 shape through the zone, changeup was mostly a change of speed.

Jack Gammer, RHP/OF, Page, 2018
Max FB: 76, FB: 75-76, CB: 65-68, CH: 70-73,
6-foot-0, 180-pound, RHP starts tall with his feet together on the rubber and uses a fairly up-tempo motion, hands stay together near his chest and uses a quick leg lift and stride to head toward the plate, stride leg lands slightly open and pulls him slightly toward the 1B side, very short arm action actually comes through a low ¾ to sidearm release point. Fastball strayed mostly straight with some slight run, breaking ball showed late 10/4 shape through the zone, changeup was straight and was mostly just a change of pace.
