Welcome to our first Looking Ahead of 2019. Every Monday, we will go into detail about three games in the coming week that have our staff excited and why. Also, we will list other games that should be good ones to check out between top teams.

Featured Matchups

No. 2 St. John’s College vs. No. 2 Calvert Hall (MD), Saturday March 16

An interstate battle of top teams wrap up the first week of game action. St. John’s is the five-time defending WCAC champs and the Cadets are loaded again this spring. The Cadets have four Division I committed arms that all could find their way onto the mound in this game as well as a stacked lineup featuring Ian Remalia (Liberty), DM Jefferson, Kyras Dawson, and freshman James Triantos (North Carolina). An interesting aspect of this game will be the matchup between St. John’s committed arms, most of whom have not thrown significant innings yet for the Cadets, and Calvert senior hitters Parker Landwehr (Boston College) and Jose Torres (NC State).

No. 7 Cosby at Matoaca, Wednesday March 13

A matchup of two of the most historically dominant teams in Chesterfield will come early this season. Cosby will bring their talented roster to Matoaca to square up with one of the more promising young teams in the area. This game has the potential to be a big time matchup of arms as Cosby is as deep as anyone on the mound and Matoaca may end up rolling out one of the top uncommitted power arms in the area in 2020 RHP Latroy Whitaker, as this is the first game of the season for the Warriors. With a regional matchup the day before against James River (Midlothian) there is no certainty in who will throw for the Titans, but with the likes of Andrew Weight (JMU), Devin Miles (Randolph Macon), Alex LaRou (VMI), and Russell Bowles (Hampden-Sydney). Cosby is sure to roll out some solid arms in this cross town battle.

No. 3 Miller School at Steward, Saturday March 16

The defending VISAA Division II champs go on the road to take on a Steward team that figures to be in the State Tournament in May. Miller is characteristically deep, especially on the mound, with seniors Matt Sykes (George Mason), Jack Masloff (VCU), and Nate Burton (Mary Washington) in the rotation along with juniors Ethan Chenault (UNC Wilmington) and Garrett Payne (NC State). Junior Jeremy Wagner (Liberty) leads a lineup that is just as deep as the rotation. Steward will challenge Miller's roster with a pair of lefties who have been at the top of the Steward rotation for three years, 2019 Logan Ransom and 2020 Harrison Clifton (Clemson)
