Mamaroneck vs White Plains: Game Recap

Vince Mercogliano
Greater Westchester Area

Mamaroneck 6, White Plains 5

After an RBI double from Spencer Lodes and a throwing error brought host White Plains to within one run in the seventh inning on Saturday, Mamaroneck’s senior centerfielder Emerson Genovese made one of the most memorable catches of the year to preserve a 6-5 win for the defending Class AA state champs.

White Plains senior shortstop Michael Ainsworth smoked a ball deep into the right-center field gap, but Genovese sprinted up the well-known hill in center field at White Plains High and laid out to make a SportsCenter-worthy catch. That stopped the bleeding for the first out of the inning, and then Mamaroneck starter Bill Flatow closed the door for a 118-pitch complete game.

Flatow threw 79 of his 118 pitches for strikes, allowing only one earned run on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Mamaroneck made six errors behind the senior right-hander, but survived after taking a 5-0 lead in the first two innings. Junior second baseman Mark Adamo was the catalyst, going 3 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Senior third baseman Peter Matt scored two runs and made a few sparkling plays in the field.

White Plains senior lefty Daniel Lotito took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits, three walks and four strikeouts through five innings (95 pitches, 53 strikes). The win improved Mamaroneck to 15-2, while White Plains dropped to 10-3-1. They each have one loss in their league, meaning the title will be decided when they play at Mamaroneck on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.
