Mid America Super 16: 7.8.16

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

For day two of the Mid America Super 16, I sat up shop at Arvest Ballpark. Arvest Ballpark is home to the Kansas City Royal AA affiliate NWA Naturals. The games here were competitive with some high end talent.

Midwest Nationals Blue 5 vs Arkansas Prospects Menard 4

The Arkansas Prospects came out hot, with 2017 RHP Tyler Gregg striking out two in the top of the 1st to hold the Nationals scoreless. Offensively they scored 2 runs, with 2017 MIF Casey Martin hitting an inside the park home run.

The Nationals answered with 1 in the second taking advantage of three walks, including one with the bases loaded.

Neither team scored in the second, the prospects added a run in the 3rd and 4th to expand their lead to 4-1.

2018 CIF Logan Thomazin took over for the Nationals from their picking up two big hits in the 6th and 7th innings including a two out hit with bases loaded to drive home 2 runs and give the Nationals a 5-4 lead.

Scout notes:

2017 RHP Tyler Gregg pitched 84-86 mph showing a solid curveball with depth thrown 70-74 mph.

2017 RHP Cade Tucker showed a low ¾ arm slot working 83-85 with command of a change up and slider. He threw the change up in plus hitter’s counts with confidence and command.

Perfect Timing Blue 9 vs American Baseball Club 4

Perfect Timing defeated American Baseball Club 9-4 behind a strong pithcing performance by 2017 RHP  Jacob Williams and a strong performance by the middle of their line up ( 2017 CIF/OF Kaleb Kimbel, and 2017 C/CIF Caleb Grace).

2017 RHP Jacob Williams pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 1 hit and striking out 7 hitters. His fastball worked 84-86 mph touching 87. He commanded his curveball at 71-74 mph with late sharp break, that helped put hitters away. He showed the ability to work out of tough situations, but at times he put himself in trouble with lack of fastball command.

Kaleb Kimbel and Caleb Grace combined for 5 of the 9 RBI’s. Kaleb Kimbrel had three hits  with the highlight being a double down the left field line which drove in two runs. Grace had a good approach on the day driving Kimbel in on multiple occasions with sacrifice flies.

American Baseball Club was held down offensively by the Perfecting Pitching Staff stranding 11 runners, that reached via walk or error.

Scout Notes:

Kaleb Kimbel is a 6 foot-1 200-pound outfielder with a large frame and a physical build. Offensively he showed an advanced approach with an understanding how to manipulate the barrel on a consistent basis. Hit two balls hard to the opposite field. He attacks the baseball with fast bat speed and a slight up approach that stays through the baseball. Defensively he showed average mobility with some stiffness to his actions. His arm has limited carry. Overall Kimbel is a physical left-handed hitter with bat speed.

NWA Bomber 2 vs EI Sticks 1

The NWA Bombers defeated the Extra Innings Sticks 2-1 in the final game of the day.

2016 RHP Kyler Johnson kept the hitters off balance for the Sticks, over 7 innings of work he allowed just 1 run on 5 hits, he struck out 8, while walking 1.

The Sticks lone run came in the top of the 1st when 2017 OF Jakobi Jackson hit a ball into the right field bullpen.

The Sticks pitching staff did its best to make the 1 run be enough, but the Bombers found away to scratch out two runs in the 4th to win.

In the 4th 2019 INF Gage Singer got things going with a single, followed by a 2016 C/RHP Logan Gragg double, 2016 OF Bryce Beckham hit a sac fly to tie the game and2017 C Kyle Knight hit a single to drive in Gragg and eventually the game winning run.
