Mishawaka upsets Penn; Clay advances

South Bend, IN
- This was supposed to be an easy sectional for Penn. They entered the defending champion and were the most talented team on paper. But again we are reminded that this is high school baseball and anything can happen.

Mishawaka was playing well of late and any time it is a crosstown rivalry you never know what is going to happen.

Penn sent ace Chad Whitmer to the mound while Mishawaka sent senior Matt Carver to the mound. Carver controlled the game with a fastball and breaking ball. He hit spots and kept Penn’s hitters off balance. Penn threatened early but was unable to push across a run.

The Cavemen struck first in the second inning off the bat of sophomore Jacob Scmatz. Scmatz crushed a ball down the right field line for the first run of the game.  Another sophomore, Trey Stoops, scored him from second with another base hit.

Penn responded with one their only threats of the night. Smallwood ripped a double to left to score Como, but was held up at second in what looked to be an easy triple. The next hitter, Cameron Glaze, grounded out to second to advance Smallwood to third but the Kingsmen would be unable to score him. The momentum remained with Mishawaka.

Penn would threaten only one more time in the fourth inning with runners on first and second and one out. Carver was able to get a groundball to short for an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

Mishawaka would add one more run in the fifth and the game ended in a 3-1 win for Mishawaka. Penn came into the game ranked 22nd.

Game Two featured South Bend Clay and South Bend Riley. Clay controlled the game the whole way. In the second inning the Clay Colonials scored two runs off the bats of 2016 Colin Greve and 2014 Adam Hickey each with an RBI. Riley would never threaten as pitcher Eric Klever dominated throwing a complete 7 inning game and only allowing 5 hits.  The final score was 4-1.

SB Clay will play Mishawaka on Monday, at South Bend Clay, at 7:00P.M for the sectional championship.
