Catholic Blue

No. 2 St. Laurence 10, Brother Rice 0
St. Laurence (22-6; 13-2) crushed its rivals from Brother Rice (17-12; 9-7) to win the Chicago Catholic League Blue Division Championship for 2013. Senior RHP Zach Lewis fired six shutout-innings at the Crusaders allowing three hits with 10 punch-outs to improve to 7-1 on the campaign. Lewis also drove home two Viking runs while Austin-Peay-recruit junior C TJ Marik chipped in with three hits and an RBI. Fellow Purdue-recruit and junior Viking leadoffman Brad Wood singled doubled scored three runs and drove home two for the CCL-Blue Champions.

No. 6 Mount Carmel 10, No. 5 St, Rita 3
Back home at beautiful Haggerty Field, Mount Carmel (24-6; 13-3) avenged Tuesday’s heart-breaking loss at St. Rita (25-6; 12-4) and routed the Mustangs on Saturday. The Caravan hit five balls that left the premises at Haggerty. Caravan senior C BJ Faulkner hit a pair of bombs and drove home three runs to lead the MC attack. Sophomores Ako Thomas and Josh Stowers went deep and senior Jason Gasser joined the Caravan bombardment with another bomb.

University of Kansas-bound LHP Jeremy Kravetz scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs in his complete-game gem to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Mount Carmel will be the No.1 seed at the Class 4A Reavis Sectional Complex which will begin with regional contests commencing on May 20. The Caravan will be joined by old friend’s No. 2-seed St. Laurence, No. 3-seed St. Rita and CCL-Blue-killer No. 4 Lyons Township.

Benet Academy 9-15 No. 17 Carmel 7-3

Carmel (20-6; 10-4), Benet Academy (18-7; 10-4)

Marian Catholic 8-2, St, Viator 1-4
Marian Catholic (20-9; 10-4) split a pair with St. Viator (15-12; 9-5) on Saturday in Arlington Heights.

With Benet Academy’s sweep of Carmel of Mundelein, Carmel, Benet and Marian Catholic sit atop the ESCC with two games to play. St. Viator is one game back of the leaders.

In game one, the Spartans rolled behind a six-hit masterpiece from senior RHP Ryan Wasso. Junior leadoffman Luis Carlo Avilla continued his all-out assault on the baseball with three more hits two runs scored and two more driven in. Erik Callaghan added two hits, including a double and plated two Spartan runs while junior Mike Bainbridge chipped in with a single and an RBI.

In game two the Lions scored four runs in the second inning and garnered the split behind Lion Roy Pettingill, who had two hits and two RBI to lead the Viator attack. Matt Prazuch had two doubles and an RBI while Lion LHP Pat Martin (5-3) picked up the win on the mound with relief help from Greg Steiner who nailed down his second save of the season. 

Joliet Catholic Academy 9-16, Marist 8-1
Joliet Catholic Academy (16-11; 8-6) slipped past Marist in ten innings in game one and then blew the Redhawks out in five innings in the nightcap. In game one junior Keegan Tyrell came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Hilltoppers the heart-wrenching victory. Tyrell finished with two hits and two RBI. Fellow junior Aaron Markley homered tripled and plated four runs to lead the Hilltopper attack. Sophomore Nick Dalesandro chipped in with two singles and an RBI.

In the five-inning game two romp junior Keegan Tyrell provided an all-out assault on the Redhawks. Tyrell went 4-for-4 with a double and plated six Hilltopper runs.

Western Illinois-bound SS Chris Tschida had a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with three doubles and a round-tripper and two RBI. Holy Cross-bound C Alex Voitik chipped in with two singles a triple and four RBI

Big 12

No. 3 Normal West 14-18, Danville 4-0
20 and counting....Normal West (25-3; 10-0) extended its winning streak to 20, demolishing Danville in a twin-bill at Danville on Saturday. In the Big 12 Conference opener, Wildcat senior RHP Nick Hieb improved to 9-0 on the season allowing four runs and five hits in his six-innings of work. Hieb struck out 10 Viking hitters. Junior Ryan Frye hit two towering bombs among his four hits and plated five runs for the ‘Cats. Fellow Wildcat junior Reed Rogers was 2-for-2 with three RBI. Missouri State-bound CF Alex Jefferson chipped in with three hits.

In the nonconference nightcap Reed Rogers, showed his stuff on the mound for the Wildcats. The only Danville Viking to reach base against Rogers did so on the lone Wildcat miscue of the day. Rogers completed his five-inning no-no to improve to 3-0 on the season. Western Illinois-bound C Adam McGinnis homered and drove home three ‘Cat runs in the nightcap. Super-soph Reid Birlingmair continued his torrid hitting with three hits and two RBI. Frye concluded a six-hit day in Danville with a pair of hits in game two while senior Josh Appel chipped in with two hits.

On Saturday, May 18 at 12:30 the “Monsters of McLean County” will invade Chicagoland as the third-ranked “Cats will take on Lyons Township (18-10) in Western Springs. The PBR’s Drake Skleba will be at the home of the Lions with all of the action. 

Bloomington 8-6, Champaign Central 6-2
Bloomington (23-9; 8-2) bounced back from the Purple Raiders run-in with No. 3 Normal West and swept away the Maroons behind super-soph Charlie Cerney who drove home the eventual game winner in the top of the seventh. In the game one Big 12 Conference affair Purple Raider sophomore Deion Thompson plated a pair and Connor Leathers added three hits. Senior Brandon Edwards and junior Trey Packard each chipped in with two hits. On the mound sophomore Tyler Workman (5-2 picked up the win while senior RHP Roman Visintine made his 2013 debut on the mound nailing down the save for Workman.

In the nonconference second game the Raiders rolled behind Cerney who had three hits. Jake Scogin and Nick Chapman chipped in with two hits each and on the mound freshman Aiden Cossio fired a six-hitter at the Maroons.

No. 1 Lincoln-Way North 7, Montini 0
Lincoln-Way North (27-1-1) showed Montini (18-5) why the Phoenix are the best team in Illinois this spring, hammering the SCC-Blue champs on Saturday in Lombard. Phoenix sophomore LHP Kyle Ostrowski (6-1) fired a three-hit shutout at the hard-hitting Broncos with eight strikeouts. Oakton Community College-bound CF Corey Krupske doubled and plated three runs while Creighton-bound Kevin Smith and Drew Korosic each had a pair of hits and an RBI. Be at Benedictine University in Lisle at 4:30 on Thursday night for the 2ND Annual Steven M. Bajenski Memorial Tournament action, featuring the to-ranked Phoenix against the second-ranked Chicago Catholic League Blue Division champions from St. Laurence (23-6). St. Laurence will meet archrival Brother Rice (17-11) at 7 in the second game of the big Bajenski twin-bill. No. 7 Downers Grove South 8, No. 4 Mundelein 1
In a battle between two of the top teams in Illinois, Downers Grove South (25-5-1) handed Mundelein (23-3) its second loss this week. University of Minnesota-bound RHP Brian Glowicki (5-2) handcuffed the Mundelein Mustangs, firing a five-hitter with seven strikeouts. Red-hot University of Iowa-bound Zack Burdi continued his torrid hitting with three more hits, including his third bomb this week and a double, plating three runs. Junior Joe Becht had a single two doubles and drove home two runs while

University of Pacific-bound Dan Mayer and junior Mike Zinnecker chipped in with two hits and an RBI. 

No. 11 Springfield Sacred-Heart-Griffin 2, Washington 1
SHG (21-5) defeated Washington behind the Cyclones red-hot CF Steve Sartore on Saturday in Springfield. Sartore had two more hits including the game-winner in the Cyclones two-run third inning.

RHP Kevin Zanger scattered nine hits over his six scoreless innings of work to pick up the win. RHP Corey Mason had a shaky seventh but finally shut down the Panthers for the hard-earned save. 

No. 12 Teutopolis 10, Shelbyville 2
Teutopolis (24-3) crushed Shelbyville, a team they could face again in the Class 2A Teutopolis Sectional on Wednesday May 22, behind a monster day from red-hot Jared Waldhoff. Waldhoff hammered not one, not two but three bombs and drove home seven runs to lead the T-Town onslaught. Junior LHP Bobby Wenthe (8-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Shoes.

Stevenson 8 No. 15 Lockport 5
Stevenson (17-9) exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh to stun Lockport (20-7) at Ed Flink Field in Lockport on Saturday. Patriot sophomore Willie Bourbon doubled home the tying run and scored the eventual game-winner on a single by Zach Novoselski. Novoselski had a three-hit day including a bomb that left the premises at Ed Flink and drove home three Patriot runs. 

No. 18 Sandburg 7, No. 24 Lake Park 4
Sandburg (20-6) Lake Park (21-7)

Andrew 11, Sandburg 1
Andrew (19-10) destroyed its district-rival Sandburg (20-7) behind T-Bolt Ryan Supple. Supple launched a grand-slam homer in the ‘Bolts five-run first inning explosion. It was Supple’s second round-tripper of 2013. Michigan State-bound 3B Dan Durkin added a solo-shot his third of the season, and Dennis Vilimek chipped in with a single and plated two runs for Andrew. RHP Ryan Forrest (5-0) fired a two-hitter at the Eagles with three strikeouts.

No. 19 Ottawa 8, DeKalb 5
Ottawa (19-2) rolled to its 15th consecutive victory on Saturday along the banks of the Illinois River on Saturday. Pirate C Colten Trager went deep singled and plated a three runs for the N. Illinois Big 12       West champions. RHP Alex Miller fired two scoreless innings at the Barbs to pick up the win.

No. 23 O’Fallon 8, Troy Triad 7
O’Fallon (21-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth at Blazier Field in O’Fallon to slip past Troy-Triad (19-8) on Saturday. Collin Holton’s double tied the game at 7-7 and he scored the eventual winning run on a booming triple from Panther C Brenndon Tindall. Panther RHP Jeff Hahs pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to pick up the win. Bradley Harrison went 3-for-3 for the Panthers with a triple and an RBI while senior Ethan Wilde chipped in with two hits, including a double and drove home a Panther run.

Waterloo 5, No. 23 O’Fallon 3
Waterloo (19-6)

Lemont 11, Lincoln-Way Central 1
Lemont (19-4) won for the 14th consecutive game crushing L-W Central behind Mike Wisz. Wisz homered, doubled, singled, scored three runs and drove home three to lead the Indian attack. LSU-recruit junior C Mike Papierski homered, doubled and drove home a pair while Jake Terrazas chipped in with a double and two RBI. LSU-recruit junior LHP Jake Latz (3-0) allowed a run and a hit while striking out seven Knights in his game-winning three 1/3 innings of work. Latz helped himself with two singles at the plate.  

Minooka 10, Joliet West 6
Minooka (20-7) won for the 11th straight time outslugging Joliet West (18-8) on the West Side of Joliet on Saturday. Mark Fox led the rampaging Indian attack with three hits, including a double and plated five Indian runs. Chris Costa added two hits and three RBI and Dane Colvin chipped with two singles and two RBI. The Minooka 7-8-9 hitters drove home all 11 Indian runs with 7-for-10 for the day at the plate.

Lincoln-Way East 5, Plainfield South 4

Edwardsville 9, East Peoria 4
Edwardsville (21-8) rolled past EP behind St. Louis University-bound Drew Curtis, who was 3-for-4 with a homer two singles and four RBI. Alec Pizzini also went deep for the Tigers and finished with two hits and an RBI.

Edwardsville 12, Civic Memorial 2
Edwardsville (22-8) was once again led by Red-Hot St. Louis University-bound Drew Curtis who was 3-for-3 with bomb a single and a double three runs scored and two runs batted in. Tiger leadoffman Blake Graham also was 3-for-3 with bomb two doubles three runs scored and two driven in. On the mound Tiger RHP Bryce Cantrell (4-1) with relief help from RHP Brock Gulledge.

Fox Valley Fox

Grayslake North 7-2, Grayslake Central 5-0
Grayslake North (16-7; 11-7) swept away city-rival Grayslake Central (18-11; 10-8) in downtown Grayslake on Saturday.

Crystal Lake South 3, Jacobs 2
Crystal Lake South (15-4; 12-4) slipped past Jacobs (16-9; 8-6) in eight exciting innings to stay in the FVC-Valley race on Saturday. Tommy Gaede drove home the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth in walk-off fashion sending Gator Nation into orbit. Josh Fruhauf pitched a scoreless top of the eighth to pick up the win on the mound for the Gators 

Cary-Grove 4, Dundee-Crown 2
Cary-Grove (18-8; 12-5) Dundee-Crown (7-14; 4-11)

McHenry (18-10; 10-7) Prairie Ridge (19-9; 10-6)

Central Suburban Crossovers

No. 7 Glenbrook South 10, Maine East 5
Glenbrook South (20-4; 12-2 South) clinched a tie for the CSL-South title with the crossover win over the Blue Demons.

Niles West 8, Maine West 7
Niles West (15-6-1; 10-4 South) stayed in the CSL-South race winning a slugfest with Maine West on Saturday.

Deerfield 10, Waukegan 8
Deerfield (17-8; 9-5 North) stayed in the CSL-North race by outslugging Waukegan on Saturday. Warrior Jake Ruben hit a pair of two-run bombs to lead the Warriors past the Bulldogs. The round-trippers were No.5 & 6 for Ruben. Red hot Xander Horwitz continued his assault on the baseball with two more hits and two RBI for the CSL-North co-leaders

Maine South 6, Glenbrook North 5
Maine South (16-9; 8-6 South) won a thriller in nine innings over Glenbrook North (18-9; 9-5) on Saturday. The Hawks were led by Johnny Cerniglia who had two hits and two RBI. Junior LHP Bobby Pennington slammed the door on the Spartans with his 4 2/3 innings of shut-out relief to pick up the win.  

New Trier 5, Niles North 4
New Trier (15-11-1; 9-6)

Catholic White

De La Salle 1, Gordon Tech 0
De La Salle’s (16-11; 13-8) UIC-Bound RHP Ricardo Ramirez (5-4) pitched and hit his Meteors to another CCL-White crown on Saturday. The future Flame right-hander fired a no-hitter at the Rams. Ramirez struck out five and only walked one and also singled home the only he would need in the first inning.  

St. Joseph 2, Bishop McNamara 0
St. Joseph (14-10; 12-9) blanked Bishop McNamara behind senior lHP Ryan Moritz. Moritz fired a three-hitter at the Fighting Irish and helped himself at the plate with a double and an RBI. Joe DeLuna added a pair of hits and an RBI while Mike Pagliuco chipped in with three hits.

Mid-Suburban Crossovers

Elk Grove 7, Hoffman Estates 6
Elk Grove (20-8; 12-3) slipped past the Hawks on Saturday along the banks of Salt Creek. Adam O’Malley led the Grenadier attack with two singles and three RBI. Matt Wary added a double and a pair of RBI while Luc DiMaso chipped in with two singles two runs scored and an RBI.

Upstate 8 Valley

Lake Park 11, South Elgin 0
Lake Park (22-7; 18-4) blanked South Elgin on Saturday to sit in first-place by percentage points ahead of red-hot Neuqua Valley. Neuqua Valley has finished up U8C-Valley play a 19-5. The Lancers have a pair of games next week with Waubonsie Valley.

Neuqua Valley 6-3, Bartlett 2-2
Neuqua Valley (22-8; 19-5) swept away Bartlett to keep its U8C championship hopes alive.

In game two, Wildcat Drew Sterioti thrilled the large Wildcat crowd in Naperville ripping a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to give NV the sweep. Purdue-bound LHP David Gerber pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win. Matt Butler chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

West Suburban Gold

Hinsdale South 14-10, Proviso East 1-0
Hinsdale South (19-10; 15-2) clinched a share of its second consecutive WSC-Gold Division championship with the sweep of the Pirates. On Monday in Darien the Hornets can repeat as WSC Gold champs with a win.

West Suburban Silver

Oak Park10-10, Proviso West 0-0
Oak Park (21-8; 14-3) clinched a share of the WSC-Silver championship with the sweep of the Panthers on Saturday. On Monday in Oak Park the Huskies, with a win, will be outright WSC-Silver champions.

Downers Grove North 2-5, Hinsdale Central 8-1
Downers Grove North (18-7; 12-5) split a pair on Saturday with Hinsdale Central (13-12; 9-8) at legion Field in Downers Grove. In game one the Red Devils were led by Boston College-bound Bobby Skogsbergh who fired a four-hitter at the Trojans with seven strikeouts. The two DGN runs were unearned. In the nightcap Trojan RHP Mike O’Malley (1-0) saved the day for the Trojans with a two-hit masterpiece.

Lyons Township 1-7, York 2-1
Lyons Township (18-10; 11-6) and York split a pair on Saturday eliminating Lyons Township from WSC-Silver championship consideration.
