NW Futures - 2022 Grads (Pt. 1)

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

At the end of February we held a Scout Day event for the NW Futures baseball academy. Scout Days are designed to focus on the players within a specific organization.

For a full statistical release of all players at the event click here

Pre-season events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Furthermore, the top players will be listed in our statewide player rankings and overall national rankings.

Tonight, we take a look at the the first half of the group of 2022 prospects who attended that day.

2022 GRADS

Eric Albios C / 2B / Skyview, WA / 2022

Wide, sloped shoulders with a lean build throughout at 5-foot-7, 145 pounds. Sets up in the box with feet just outside of shoulder width and a tall upright posture. Takes a controlled leg lift into forward stride. Lands with weight centered. Hands stay loaded just below shoulder height. Hand placement allows barrel to get on plane early and stay flat through the zone. Loose, one-handed finish through contact. Defensively, stays low behind the plate and shows the ability to keep glove hand quiet while receiving. Hips work beneath the ball, which allows glove hand to work down-to-up while framing. Sets up with a slightly staggered stance. Quick actions out of crouch and into throwing motion. Clean, fluid exchange into high ¾ release. Showed consistent accuracy and arm talent on this look.

Josh Baldwin C / OF / Battle Ground, WA / 2022

5-foot-10, 165 pounds with some present strength. Starts in an athletic, balanced stance. Slight bend in his lower half in the box and relaxed, loose hands. Hovers on back side as he goes into short, low leg lift. Uses a short, subtle hand load to initiate swing. Barrel works quick, direct to the ball. Shows feel for generating consistent contact. ‘Handsy’ type of swing with a level finish. Defensively, presents a compact target with noticeable control of his glove hand. Keeps flexion in his left arm while receiving. Clean footwork out of crouch and into throwing motion. Exchanges ball at about chest height into short, bent arm action. High ¾ release.

Trenton Hamilton 2B / SS / Washougal, WA / 2022

5-foot-9, 140 pounds with square upper half. Uses a relaxed stance in the box with lower half slightly open to the pitcher. Keeps rhythm and movement in hands during leg lift into forward stride. Lands in a wide base after creating stretch between his barrel and lower half. Shows a clean, direct swing to the ball. Contact type of approach. Didn’t try to do too much. Let the ball travel and kept barrel inside of the ball. Hits against a firm front side into a two-handed finish. Defensively, shows light footwork in his actions while keeping control of a soft glove hand. Allows ball to travel deep into his fielding posture, which gives him a quick and easy exchange. Arm action stays short and bent from a low 3/4 slot. Keeps momentum behind throw after release.

Zach Hauser 3B / RHP / BGHS, WA / 2022

Long, lanky frame at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds. Hits from a wide base with some weight pre shifted onto his backside. Uses a ‘knee knock’ type of move with his lower half. Minimal load with his hands in order to get into hitting position. More of a subtle move to lower them at landing. Barrel gets on plane and stays flat through the zone with more uphill path after contact. Stays tall throughout and has significant leverage in swing. Defensively, has an upright pre-pitch set up with glove hand at about waist height. Works down to the ball with a hip hinge move, keeping back flat and over glove hand. Steady, deliberate tempo to his actions. Loose, whippy arm action. Comfortable lowering slot while on the move and during double play feeds. On the mound, has a simple, methodical delivery. Works from the center of the rubber. Stays tall at leg lift. Slight dip on his back leg during stride while creating a bit of angle with his shoulders. Smooth, continuous arm path out of hand break. Gets more compact/short out at release. Throws from ¾ slot. Whippy arm action thru release with extension out over his front leg. Flashed feel for 3-pitch mix.

Jordan Hockett OF / RHP / Mt. Spokane , WA / 2022

Athletic frame at 5-foot-9, 155 pounds. Balanced stance at the plate with feet outside of shoulder width and knees angled in towards each other. Low leg kick into a long forward stride. Head stays quiet & hands maintain loaded position near back shoulder at landing. Creates easy bat speed while showing some lift in his barrel path thru the zone. High, 2-handed finish thru contact. Clean, controlled actions on defense in the OF. Gets thru the ball with an aggressive tempo once his alignment is set. Athletic, easy strides while ranging laterally. Whippy, compact arm action with high ¾ release. Above average arm strength from OF. On the mound, uses a simple, repeatable delivery. Lead leg drives up to about waist height as he keeps weight over backside. Drop and drive move with lower half while keeping a level shoulder plane out of hand break. Front hip opens up and gives him clean direction towards his target. Short, tight arm circle into ¾ release point. Aggressive finish with hand speed out front.

Ethan Hubbell RHP / Camas, WA / 2022

6-foot-1, 200 pounds with a durable build frame & long levers. Worked exclusively out of the stretch during bullpen. Comes set with hands at waist and weight on his rear leg. Front leg starts in a wide base  before coiling back into his rear hip. Glove side and throwing arm show full extension after hand break. Slight cross action in his landing. Full arm path out to ¾ release point. Eyes stay on target throughout. Glove side stays closed at landing and works tight to his body as he rotates out over his front side. Repeats delivery well on all of his offerings.
