MEQUON, WI – Friday’s second semifinal game saw much of the same as game one as small ball looked to be the name of the game again as New Berlin West walked off with a 7-6 win in eight innings. New Berlin West bunted their way to the championship with back to back successful squeeze plays winning in walk off fashion.

The Vikings didn’t score until the fifth inning when they trailed by five runs. Kettle Moraine got on the board first thanks to a leadoff triple in the second by junior outfielder Chris Trafton. The Lasers would follow that up in the third with four more runs. Juniors Jacob Pohlman, Matt Melbye and Robbie Dombrowski supplied the offense all three contributed with a hit in the inning, Melbye’s being an opposite field RBI double.

With a 5-0 lead in the fifth things looked bleak for the Vikings. A two RBI single by Kevin Marx cut the lead to 5-2 and gave the Vikings a fighting chance in the seventh.

Kettle Moraine couldn’t close the door in the seventh as some defensive miscues led to a huge three run inning for the Vikings to tie the game at five. With two outs sophomore Allen Peil squared a ball up to left field that the Laser left fielder couldn’t handle, allowing the tying run to score.

Trafton would get things started again for Kettle Moraine, this time in extra innings. Trafton led off the eighth with a double. After a sac bunt move Tafton to third, two batters later Brady Dumi legged out an infield hit to give the Lasers a one run advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth New Berlin West got their first two runners aboard and then sacrificed them over to second and third. With two runners in scoring position and one out, Tim Rink and Mike Phillips executed the squeeze play in consecutive at bats to perfection. scoring the final two runs and walking off with the 7-6 win.
