New Berlin West win the 2013 Summer State Championship

MEQUON, WI – With the summer state title on the line the New Berlin West Vikings won a thriller 11-6 in only their second appearance in the state finals winning their first summer baseball state championship.

With the score knotted at six the game would head into extra innings. In the top of the eight, New Berlin West turned what looked to be a minor threat into a five run outburst. With just a runner on second and two outs the Vikings would go on a two out rally scoring five consecutive runs, led by Allen Piel two RBI single up the middle.

Sophomore Piel was the star of the Viking offense as the middles infielder chipped in with two more RBI on a double in the Vikings second of two three run frames. Piel finished going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.

West Bend West sent the game into extras with a five run frame in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Jacob Kopp highlighted the inning with a bases clearing double to right center.

The Summer State Title for New Berlin West marks the first in school history in only their second appearance in the state tournament, first appearance was in 2010.
