The highly anticipated match up between No. 1 Huntingtown and the No. 6 Leonardtown quickly turned into a slugfest Monday afternoon. Both teams had to battle a very tight strike zone and a blistering wind that was howling all game. The scoring was hot and heavy in the first as both teams put four runs on the board with some sloppy play. Leonardtown took advantage of four walks and two errors in the inning recording just one hit while Huntingtown walked six times and took advantage of two Raider errors.

Huntingtown would double the score in the second with two hit by pitches, two singles, a double, a walk, and an intentional walk. Ryan Terrents RBI double and Brian Ferreira’s 2-RBI single highlighted the inning for the Hurricanes.

As all well-coached, tough-minded teams do; Leonardtown kept fighting back, putting another run on the board in the 3rd, bringing it to 8-5 heading to the bottom of the third. In the bottom half, the Hurricanes took control responding with six runs to increase their lead to 9.

Leonardtown continued to battle but Huntingtown’s offense was just too prolific in the end. A 2-RBI triple by Cy Harwood and two three-run homers by Stafford Allison ended the slugfest after 6 innings with the final score 23-11.

Allison was the star of the game going 3-for-4 with 2 home runs, 6 RBI’s, 2 BB’s and scored 5 times. Terrents finished 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and scored four runs, Harwood went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, RBI, and scored twice. Jack Rosnage (3-for-3, 2 BB’s, 3 RBI’s, 2 R’s) and Matt Pritchett (1-for-3, 2 BB’s, 4 RBI’s, 2 R’s) both had big days at the bottom of the lineup for the Hurricanes as well.

What’s Next: No. 1 Huntingtown will travel to Great Mills and No. 6 Leonardtown will travel to No. 11 Northern (Cal.) for another big SMAC showdown on Wednesday.
