North Arkansas Prospect ID: Pitcher Evaluation

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

The North Arkansas Prospect ID, was Wednesday July 15th at University of Arkansas Fort Smith. We had talented players work out at every position. Here is my breakdown of the pitchers who attended.

Carter Brown, 2016, RHP/OF Bentonville HS
Brown is a 6-foot-1 190 pound right hander with a large-frame and average build. He worked from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeated his mechanics with some effort. He commanded the strike zone with 3 pitches. He threw his fastball 84-86 with slight sink. His curveball was thrown 70-71 mph with gradual break, but was thrown for strikes. He commanded the change up, throwing the pitch with near fastball arm speed and arm side run at 73-76 mph. Overall Brown has a strong arm with a feel to pitch, in his defensive work he registered a 90 mph throwing from the outfield. I believe with some mechanically fixes he will throw harder, and be a solid pitcher at the collegiate level.

Jackson Sloan, 2017, RHP, Fayetteville HS
Sloan is a 6-foot-2 165 right-hander with a medium-frame and an athletic build. He has a loose arm working from a ¾ arm slot. He repeats his mechanics and rhythm allowing him to command the strike zone on a consistent basis. His fastball was 82-84 mph. He threw his curveball with near fast ball at 67-70 mph with gradual break. The change-up is a more advanced pitch thrown a 73-75 mph with arm-side run.  Overall Sloan has an arm that projects harder and a feel to pitch for a player his age. He is a player to watch over the next year as he should receive more mound time in 2016.

Hayes Cox, 2017, RHP, Fayetteville HS
Cox is a 5-foot-10 160-pound RHP/INF with a medium frame and an average build. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeats his mechanics but he does you some effort and has a slight head jerk. He located his fastball consistently in the bottom half of the strike zone at 80-82 mph. He complimented his fastball with a curveball and changeup. The curveball was thrown at 69 mph with 11/5 action with gradual break. His changeup was thrown at 66-67 mph with deception due to throwing with fastball arm speed. Overall Cox has advanced pitchability for his age, as he continues develops he will be a solid pitcher.

Garrett Williams, 2017, RHP, Fayetteville HS
Williams is a 6-foot 165-pound RHP with a medium frame and an athletic build. He has a short arm action with a from an H ¾ arm slot. He threw his fastball 76-79 mph and located pitches on arm side. His curveball was 65-67 mph and his changeup was consistently 68 mph. He repeats his delivery allowing him to compete in the strike zone. He showed consistent rhythm. He would benefit from driving off his back side and getting more extension toward home plate.

Jared Dawson, 2016, RHP/OF Dardanelle HS
Dawson is a 6-foot-2 175-pound right-hander with a large frame and an athletic build.  His fastball was 79-81 mph complimented by a curveball thrown at 69-72 mph. The curveball lacked depth but was thrown for strikes. He has a quick short arm, thrown from an H ¾ arm slot. Other than needing to get more extension Dawson is sound mechanically. He repeats his delivery and has consistent rhythm. Overall he projects to get better as he lengthens his arm actions and allows his above average athleticism to take over.

Nathan Lyons, 2018, RHP/INF Bentonville HS
Lyons is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-hander with a large frame and a physical build. He threw is fastball 79-82 with some command issues but when he was in the strike zone it had late life. He did a good maintaining arm speed with his secondary pitches throwing his curveball and changeup with near fastball arm speed. The secondary pitches had inconsistent shape. Mechanically he repeated his delivery, at times he would become rotational and lacked extension causing him to miss up out of the strike zone. Overall Lyons is an intriguing player with a physical arm strength and solid athleticism he will be a player to follow over the next 3 seasons.
