Fall Ball Notes-Northern Nevada

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

If yesterday’s scrimmage is any indication, the high school spring season will be extremely competitive.  The Manogue Miners visited the Carson Senators on Tuesday afternoon for a fall scrimmage. In true fall ball form, each team rotated their pitchers through the game, one inning at a time as well as made use of free substitution and an unlimited batting order.  Granted there were some notable names missing, especially from the Miners side in, UNLV Commit, Josh Rolling, SS, 2019 and Rylan Charles, OF, 2020, but plenty of players made their mark.

The top of the Miner lineup appeared extremely potent. Leadoff hitter, Paul Vossen, CF, 2019, had a huge day at the plate, showing off his ability to use the whole field as well as employ the short game to reach base multiple times. Playing SS in the absence of Rolling was Calvin Bailey, IF, 2019.  Baliey is a capable infielder with enough arm to stay at the position. It is easy to see him at any one of the three infield positions.  In the batter’ box, he showed a consistent opposite field approach and quick bat.  Both Vossen and Bailey ran the bases well and both will be tough to contend with. In addition, TJ Czyz, RHP/IF, 2019 a transfer from Palo Verde in Las Vegas, revealed his prowess by consistently driving the ball to right field. Moreover, he was impressive on the mound showing good feel for a breaking ball with tight spin. Overall, Manogue placed a senior laden group on the field and their experience should carry them far.

On the other hand, Carson appears to be a young group.  Starting just 3 seniors, they might rely heavily on some younger players to fill important roles. Nevertheless, one senior player extremely well, Kahle Good, IF/C, 2019.  He is aggressive hitter who displayed some pull-side power, doubling off the wall for a base clearing double. Defensively, he snared a smash down the first base line while. Later, he ranged down the left field line to catch a pop up at shortstop, and blocked and recovered well, while catching.  His versatility would not doubt be an asset to a college program. Some notable younger performers were catcher, Bryce Baker, 2021, and Jade Stotts, RHP, 2021.  Barker showed promising defensive skills with solid arm strength.  Stotts is a developing pitcher with a good frame who has plenty of room growth. Most intriguing was his feel for his breaking ball.  Although a touch lite, the spin and shape are there with the makings of an out pitch down the line.
