Notre Dame tops Clintonville behind Zacharias on the mound

By Spencer Flaten

GREEN BAY, WI- Notre Dame continued its journey in the WIAA Division 2 playoffs with a 4-1 win over Clintonville in Friday’s regional final.

Senior Turner Doornink started on the mound for the Truckers, while Nick Zacharias took the bump for Notre Dame.

Doornink helped out his own cause by belting a solo home run to left field in the first inning. The homer continued his torrid postseason pace at the plate. Through three games, he smashed four home runs.

However, it was all Notre Dame from there on out. The Tritons tied it up with a suicide squeeze bunt by shortstop Ty Yewman in the second inning, and tacked on two more in the third via an RBI groundout by Zacharias and an RBI single by third baseman Charlie Rotherham. The final nail in the coffin came from outfielder Davis Elm, who hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Zacharias pitched a gem, allowing two hits while striking out 9. He only allowed four Truckers to reach base in the entire game.

Elm finished the day 2-for-3 for Notre Dame, picking up an RBI and three stolen bases. Doornink went 1-for-3 for Clintonville, tallying an RBI and a walk. He went five innings on the mound, striking out three.

The Tritons have now made it to sectionals four years in a row. They’ll face Mosinee at 10:00 AM  on Tuesday in the Sectional Semifinals. Notre Dame defeated Mosinee in the same round a year ago.
