Ohio Spotlight Game: District Final - Columbus St. Francis DeSales vs Licking Valley

In the game between DeSales and Licking Valley, DeSales sophomore RHP Greg Gilbert face-off against Licking Valley’s senior LHP Derek Carr.

Although it looked as if DeSales was well on their way to a District Championship, Licking Valley made noise in the top of the 7th to tie the game. DeSales answered in the bottom half of the 7th with a walk-off infield single.

Carr, an Ohio University commit, had a rough start giving up 2 runs on no hits in the bottom of the 1st.

Licking Valley quickly responded in the top of the 2nd, scoring two runs to even the game at 2.

Carr settled in and allowed his defense to work behind him until DeSales scored 3 in the bottom of the 5th ending Carr’s day.

Sophomore RHP Gilbert relied closely on his defense in the outing.

Pounding the zone, Gilbert was able to hold Licking Valley’s offense to only 3 runs through 6 innings of work. Senior RHP Brendan Alas came on in the top of the 7th to close the door on Licking Valley but they weren’t going down without a fight.

Licking Valley scored 3 runs in the top half of the 7th to tie the game at 6.

Heading to the bottom of the 7th, DeSales was able to lead the inning off with a game threatening triple by Justin Antoncic. With no outs, Licking Valley chose to intentionally walk the bases loaded in hopes for a double play.

A swinging bunt was all it took from the DeSales offense as the game winning run slide into home plate.

The win improved DeSales record to 19-7 and the loss dropped Licking Valley to 15-15-1.
