Ohio Spotlight Game: District Final - #10 Padua Franciscan vs Firelands

Padua took advantage of Firelands base on balls and miscues to escape with a 2-1 district semi-final victory Thursday at Mottl field in Parma Hts.

Freshman left fielder Austin Urban got the Falcons off to a good start, when he led off the game with a walk, then advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior third baseman, Jeremy Simonovich. Freshman second baseman Alex Brill then singled on a line drive to left, putting runners on first and third.

Junior center fielder then drove Urban with a single to left for the first run of the game.  Firelands threatened again in the second getting base hits by senior designated hitter, Aaron Stevanus and Urban.

But Padua’s Starter Marc Ochoa got a ground ball to end the inning.

Junior left-hander Trevor Damron was rolling along giving up only one hit through the first six innings, that being right fielder Nick Pillin’s double to right center in the second inning.

The fourth inning involved a lead-off walk to Malone commit Michael Kilner, who advance to second on an infield error, was balked to third, then scored on a RBI ground out to second by outfielder Bogi Kazmour

Damron kept getting outs though, while occasionally walking batters. Padua’s Ochoa settled down and threw five consecutive 1-2-3 scoreless innings, aided by a  double play in the seventh.

Kazmour scored the winning run in the sixth inning for the home team after a leadoff walk, then came all the way around to score on a bunt single by Pillin, after Damron shoveled the ball past the first baseman into right field.

Pillion finished with Padua’s only two hits of the game.

Damron finished the game giving up only two hits while striking out 11 batters but also walked six hitters and hit one batter.

Ochoa settled down to get a solid win, giving up five hits, walking one, while striking out six batters.
