Ohio Spotlight Game: Regional Final - #16 Cincinnati La Salle vs #2 Milford

CINCINNATI – Behind a strong pitching performance by Jacob Kaiser, the La Salle Lancers (24-7) beat the Milford Eagles (28-3), 7-1 on Friday night at University of Cincinnati to win the Division 1 Regional Championship.

The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing one run on four hits to lead the Lancers to the Division 1 State Semifinal on Thursday, June 2.

Kaiser and the Lancers got off to a slow start, as The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first. Matt Kirk tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

La Salle responded in the top of the third, scoring one run on three hits against Eagles starter Kyle Ruehlman. Kevin Browne laced a single to center, scoring Brady Reynolds from third to make it 1-1.

The Lancers stretched their lead in the top of fifth inning.

With two outs Griffin Merritt walked and moved to second on a single to left by Jon Hambrick. Tyler Wardwell followed with a shallow bloop down the left field line that dropped and scored both runners, making it 3-1.

La Salle put the game out of reach in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Merritt laced a bases clearing triple over centerfielder's head to make it 6-1.

The 3-run triple would chase Ruehlman, who finished the game tossing 5.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 11 hits.

Milford tried to rally in the sixth, as Kirk lead off with a triple. However, he was stranded at third as Kaiser induces two short pop ups and a ground out to escape trouble.

La Salle would add a run in the seventh inning to cap the scoring at 7-1.

Offensively, the Lancers tallied 12 hits on the night. Reynolds went 2-for-5 with a run scored while Wardwell went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Despite only collecting four hits as a team, the Eagles right fielder had a big day at the plate. Kirk went 2-for-3 with two triples and a run scored. He was the only player on the Milford squad to record multiple hits.
