Ohio Spotlight Game: Regional Semifinal - #2 Poland Seminary vs NDCL

#2 Poland Seminary fought through some early struggles to pull away from a good Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin squad, 8-2.

Poland put 3 runs up in the bottom of the third inning to break a 2-2 tie, and another three in the bottom of the fourth to put it away.

Poland got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when senior centerfielder Eric White, batting in the 2-hole, tripled to deep right center and scored when junior first baseman, Paul O’Shaughnessy drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Junior pitcher Dan Klase of Poland ran into some big trouble as he walked the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, including a wild pitch and a passed ball, which allowed senior right-fielder Nick Mann to score from third. Junior lead-off designated hitter Nick Cipriani got a big RBI single with two outs to give NDCL the lead, 2-1.

Klase helped himself in the bottom of the inning with a one out single to right, stole second, and moved to third on a passed ball. Senior second baseman/ pitcher Jared Burkert then brought him home with a hard line drive triple to left center, tying the score 2-2.

Poland came right back in the third to put up a three spot making it 5-2. 

White again got it going with a single to left-center, O’Shaughnessy Walked and Junior catcher Nick Petrolla drove them both in with a long double to the wall in center field. Petrolla eventually scored on a single up the middle by junior left fielder Tony Chiaro.

Burkert led off the fourth inning with a hard double off the third baseman, Followed by senior right fielder Matt Baker’s walk. Junior designated hitter Don Drummond flew out to center field as Burkert advanced on the tag. Baker then stole second and moved to third on a single by White, which drove in Burkert from third. O’Shaughnessy then drove in both Baker and White with a big time line drive that two hopped the fence in right center. 

That pushed the score to 8-2, which, Klase and junior reliever Vince Garayua made stand over the last three innings.

Poland plays Chagrin Falls today in the regional final at Hudson.
