Ohio Underclass Games: Team 1 Player Analysis

Below, we have recapped the players from Team 1 (Black) at the Ohio Underclass Games. To view the complete statistical results from the event, please click here. Later this week, we will release the top players from the event as well as update the Class of 2015 and 2016 rankings.

Adam McDonough, 1B/3B, Lakota East HS, 2015

6-foot, 215-pound corner infield prospect. Projects as a first baseman at the next level. Uses short arm action in the field through high ¾ arm slot. Recorded top velocity of 72 mph with accuracy to his throws at both positions. Best tool is his bat. The right-handed hitter starts in a balanced stance. Uses short stride with smooth, simple load. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Shows pull power in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. Ran a 5.05 out of the box. Always talk. High energy player that is always in the game, whether on the field or in the dugout.

Adam Wolf, LHP, Edison HS, 2015

6-foot-4, 185-pound southpaw with tall, thin frame. Throws through high ¾ arm slot. Uses short arm action. Tendency to sit and collapse on backside. Uses a short stride. Fastball sat at 79-81 mph with some cut (we have seen the velocity higher in the past). Used a 63-64 mph breaking ball with gradual 1/7 break down in the zone. Also showed a 71-73 mph changeup.

Christian McFarland, OF, Olentangy HS, 2016

5-foot-8, 140-pound outfielder with lean, athletic frame. From the outfield, he uses long arm action through a ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 82 mph. Shows some softness in his hands. Fluid footwork and consistently plays through the baseball. Good feel for the position. The right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a smooth, simple load. Overall simple, compact swing. Line drive type production. Registered 4.64 home to first time.

Colin Shepherd, 2B, Olentangy Orange HS, 2016

5-foot-11, 150-pound infield prospect with thin frame. Projects as a second base type at the next level. Uses short arm action. Reached top velocity of 70 mph across the infield. Needs to continue improving arm strength and playing through the baseball. At present, his best tool is his bat. Swings from the left side. Shows good balance in his swing. Uses short stride. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Opposite field type production out of his swing.

Connor Echols, IF/OF, Sidney HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 170-pound with strong, athletic frame. From the outfield, he shows long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Throws have some carry with top velocity of 81 mph. Tends to throw uphill. Overall fluid footwork with athletic actions. In the infield, he throws well from all angles. Shows good lateral movement. Reached top velocity of 78 mph. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Uses a short stride. Takes uphill path to the ball. Registered a 4.56 home to first time.

Corey Stanley, RHP, Bloom Carroll HS, 2015

6-foot, 140-pound right-handed pitcher with skinny, average frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Good use of his body. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sits 79-81 mph with occasional run. Uses two type of breaking balls. Slider shows tight break at 71-73 mph and curveball is a bit softer at 63-66 mph. Locates both pitches well. Also showed a 73 mph changeup.

Damon Egnor, RHP, Paulding HS, 2016

6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed pitcher with strong, solid frame. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed and long arm action. Delivery requires regular effort. Fastball sat 80-82 mph with arm side run. Shows command of a 70-72 mph breaking ball with gradual 11/5 break. Also showed a 71 mph knuckleball. In his first inning of work, Egnor struck out 4 of 5 batters.

Dominic Brown, OF, Worthington Kilbourne HS, 2015

5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder. Posses strong, athletic frame. Registered a 4.47 out of the box. Starts slightly open. Uses a toe tap in his load and stride. Good use of his lower half. Shows some quickness in his hands. Uses short, level path with pull tendencies in his swing. Ball showed carry off the bat. Overall, fluid rhythm. In game play, he single to right field and tripled down the line with the bases load. In the field, he uses short arm action from high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 82 mph with some carry to his throws. Athletic defender with good footwork.

Ethan Fremder, C/1B, Piketon HS, 2015

6-foot, 220-pound catcher with big, solid frame. Uses short arm action through over the top arm slot. Pop times ranged between 2.14-2.36. Will improve as footwork becomes more fluid and transfer shortens up. Reached top velocity of 71 mph out of the crouch. At present, his best tool is his bat. May eventually make the shift to first base. Uses balanced stance with short stride. Good use of strong lower half. Consistently squared up the baseball in batting practice with pull power. Ran a 4.68 out of the box.

Jace Komminsk, C/IF, Thomas Worthington HS, 2015

6-foot, 190-pound prospect with solid, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Quick, compact transfer. Pop times ranged between 2.17 to 2.19. Reached top velocity of 73 mph out of the crouch. At the plate, he starts in a balanced stance. Uses a short stride and good use of his lower half. Takes short, level path. Fluid rhythm to his swing. Line drive type production. Drove the ball to all fields during game play. Ran a 4.72 out of the box.

Jake Flynn, C, Pickerington Central HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 179-pound catcher with big, athletic frame. Uses short arm action from high ¾ arm slot. Shows a hitch in his arm action. Starts in wide base. Reached top velocity of 76 mph from the crouch. Velocity reached 76 mph from the crouch. Pop times sat between 2.19-2.35. Will improve with better glove to hand transfer. At the plate, he starts in a wide, open stance. Tendency to bar in his load, which creates some length. Uses a leg kick with short stride. Manages good balance. Some quickness in his hands. Registered 4.51 home to first time out of the box.

Jared Shoup, RHP/1B, Montpelier HS, 2015

6-foot-4, 200-pound prospect with big, solid frame. On the mound, the right-hander throws through high ¾ arm slot. Uses short arm action. Sat at 76-78 mph with straight action. His curveball was soft with 12/6 break at 64 mph. Defensively, he recorded a top velocity of 70 mph on his throws. Tends to field the ball deep. At the plate, he wraps in his load, which creates some length. Limited use of his lower half. Registered top exit velocity of 78 mph. Ran a 4.94 out of the box.

Jett Swetland, RHP/3B, Highland HS, 2015

6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect with strong, mature build. Legit two-way prospect at this stage. On the mound, he shows quick arm speed through a ¾ to high ¾ slot. Fastball started at 82-84 mph with occasional run. Used a 71-73 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action down in the zone. Tended to slow down his arm speed, but located the pitch consistently for strikes. Showed a straight 79 mph changeup. Only allowed one hit while striking out one batter and inducing several ground balls in game play. In the field, he projects as a corner infielder. Uses low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 79 mph (we have seen him higher previously). Shows some fluidity to his footwork. Transfer gets long with packing of the glove. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with slight open stance and in a bit of a crouch. Shows some quickness in his hands. Potential middle of the order type bat. Creates solid contact with pull power in his swing. Ball jumps off his bat. Tendency to wrap in his load, which creates some length.

Jimmy Crabtree, RHP/OF, Utica HS, 2016

6-foot, 175-pound prospect that projects as a pitcher at the next level. Right now, he is more of a thrower than a pitcher, but shows a live arm with plenty of time to develop and mature. Fastball sat 84-86 mph with some run and dropped down to 82 mph out of the stretch. Tendency to sit on his backside. Command was erratic at times, but put together dominating runs that showed off his potential. Breaking ball was 66-68 mph but didn’t locate consistently in the zone on this occasion. Also used a 66 mph knuckleball. From the outfield, he throws through a high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 89 mph with carry to his throws. Will improve as footwork becomes more fluid and natural. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows some power. Bars his arm in his load, which creates some length to his swing. Takes uphill path to the ball. Ran a 4.29 home to first time.

John Rensel, 1B/OF, Tallmadge HS, 2015

6-foot-4, 220-pound left-handed power hitter with strong, physical frame. Starts in an open stance at the plate. Uses short stride with good balance to his swing. Hands are in consistent position at load. Takes short, uphill path to the ball. Created solid contact in batting practice and game play. Posses pull power. Drove the ball pull side for base hits in several at bats. Registered a top exit velocity of 86 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.97 out of the box. Moves well around the bag at first base with feel for the position. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot with some quickness to his transfer. Reached top velocity of 76 mph.

Jordan Burns, 1B/C, Archbishop Hoban HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect with big frame. Moved well off the bag at first base. Uses short arm action and high ¾ arm slot with accurate throws on double play balls. Reached top velocity of 72 mph. Behind the plate, he shows similar arm action. Reached a top velocity of 77 mph. Pop times ranged between 2.06-2.19 and will only get better as he shorten and quickens his footwork. Offensively, he starts with an open stance. Uses a leg kick. Shows lots of movement in his swing. Quick hands with top exit velocity of 89 mph off the tee. Consistent line drive production. Doubled to left-center in game play. Ran a 4.4 time out of the box.

Joseph McGuiness, C, Olentangy HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 201-pound catcher that looks the part with strong, mature build. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 73 mph with accurate throws on the bag. Pop times ranged between 2.11-2.24. Shows good receiving skills and reactions behind the plate. The left-handed hitting catcher starts with a balanced setup. Uses a short stride. Hands are in position at load. Takes short path to the ball. Quiet, fluid rhythm to his swing. Drove the ball gap to gap in batting practice with some pop in his bat. Ran a 4.53 out of the box.

Lucas Goehler, RHP/OF, Medina HS, 2015

6-foot, 150-pound prospect with thin, wiry build. Projects best as a pitcher at this stage. Throws through over the top arm slot with some deception to his delivery. Shows some quickness in his arm speed. Fastball is straight at 81-83 mph. Breaking ball is thrown near fastball arm speed at 67-70 mph. Shows 12/6 break down in the zone. From the outfield, he shows similar arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Long exchange and throws uphill.  At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Tendency to wrap in his load. Takes short, level path to the ball. Ran a 4.6 out of the box.

Nick Silvis, IF, Indian Lake HS, 2016

5-foot-8, 128-pound pound infielder with small, thin frame. Defensively, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 60 mph. Tendency to be on his heels. Projects as second baseman. At the plate, the left-handed hitter uses an athletic setup. Shows short, compact swing. Slappy, contact type hitter that created opposite field production. Registered a 4.79 home to first time.

Nick Stone, LHP, Westerville Central HS, 2015

6-foot, 150-pound southpaw with average, athletic frame. Throws through ¾ arm slot with average arm speed and short arm action. Delivery requires regular effort. Fastball sits 78-80 mph with some natural cut. Relies on a 63-64 mph breaking ball with 1/7 movement down in the zone and a 71-72 mph changeup. Uses quick tempo and fills up the zone. Continually challenges hitters.

Ryan Fournier, IF, Oregon Clay HS, 2015

5-foot-11, 180-pound infielder with strong, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Quick exchange. Reached top velocity of 80 mph across the infield. Shows good lateral movement and feel for the position. Attacks the baseball. At the plate, the right-handed hitter consistently squares up the baseball. Balanced setup. Rotational based swing with short stride. Reached top velocity of 89 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.39 out of the box.

Tyler Johnson, RHP, Olentangy Orange HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher with thin, wiry frame. Throws with short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Very quick arm. Ball jumps out of his hand. Fastball sat at 86-87 mph out of the windup with some run. Located on both sides of the plate. Uses a 69-70 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action. Tendency to show the pitch. Live arm that will only get better as secondary pitches improve.
