Ohio Underclass Games: Team 5 Player Analysis

Andy Marzheuser, RHP, Mason HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 160-pound righty. Throws through high ¾ to over the top arm slot with average arm speed. Shows long arm action and wraps a bit on the back side. Regular effort to his delivery. Fastball sat at 80 mph and touched up to 81 mph with some run. Uses a 64 mph breaking ball with 11/5 break. Tends to show the pitch in his wrist. 

Avery Janning, RHP/1B, Bishop Watterson HS, 2015

6-foot-4, 190-pound prospect with long, lanky. Projects best as a pitcher at this stage. Throws with long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Tall and fall type delivery. Velocity will increase with better use of his lower half. Currently sits at 82-83 mph with slight run to his fastball. Uses a 12/6 breaking ball at 68 mph as well as a developing 67-69 mph changeup. In the field, he moves well around the bag. Uses short arm action and shows some quickness in his transfer. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph. At the plate, he starts in a wide stance. Hands begin high before his load. Maintains balance through his swing. Solid contact. Registered a top exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 4.8 out of the box.

Brad Hagerich, 3B/OF, Amherst Steele HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 160-pound prospect with average, athletic frame. From the outfield, he uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 77 mph. Shows average hands and feet. In the infield, he takes good routes to the ball and shows some softness in his hands. Transfer can get long at times. Reached top velocity of 74 mph across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a balanced stance. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Shows some power in his swing, which will improve as he better incorporates his lower half. Registered a top exit velocity of 78 mph. ran a 4.47 out of the box. Takes short, slight uphill path to the ball. Registered a top exit velocity of 83 mph. Ran a 4.47 out of the box

Cody Gabriel, LHP, Upper Sandusky HS, 2015

6-foot-3, 238-pound southpaw with big, soft frame. Shows good potential for the future as he matures physically. Throws with regular effort through high ¾ slot. Shows some quickness in his arm. Tends to sit on his backside in his delivery. Velocity should pick up as he gets moving quicker to the plate with the lower half. Fastball shows excellent, natural cut at 80-82 mph. Consistently induced bad swings from hitters due to late cutting action. Threw a 70 mph breaking ball with 1/7 action as well as a 68 mph changeup. Definite follow.

Cole Gibson, RHP, Gahanna Lincoln HS, 2015

6-foot-6, 220-pound right-hander committed to Oakland University shortly after the event. Long legs with a big frame. Easily projectable at this stage. Throws through high ¾ arm slot. Long, stiff type arm action. Fastball sits at 81-84 mph with some run. Locates on both sides of the plate. Breaking ball sits at 65-68 mph. Gradual 12/6 break, but good depth to the pitch. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 77 mph.

Devon Garcia, IF, Toledo St. John’s HS, 2015

6-foot, 175-pound infielder that looks the part with athletic frame. In the field, he uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Takes good routes to the ball with easy, fluid footwork. Makes up for arm strength (76 mph across the infield) with quick release and exchange. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Tends to get heavy on his front side.

Dillon Miller, OF/IF, Dublin Jerome HS, 2016

5-foot-11, 161-pound two-way prospect with average, athletic frame. From the outfield, he throws with long arm action through a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Shows average feet and receiving skills. Reached a top velocity of 73 mph. In the infield, he throws from a similar slot. Tends to field the ball deep. Uses a long transfer. Reached a top velocity of 73 mph. Uses an athletic, balanced stance with a toe tap trigger to his swing. Takes short, level path to the ball. Registered a top exit velocity of 84 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.61 out of the box.

Jake Szendry, RHP/IF, North Canton Hoover HS, 2015

5-foot-9, 170-pound prospect with small, solid stature. Projects best as a pitcher at this stage. Works fast on the mound and fills up the zone with strikes. Continually challenges hitters. Throws through a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot. Shows quickness in his arm with short arm action. Fastball was down in the zone for strikes at 80-81 mph with some run. Showed a 68-69 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action. Tends to slow down his arm on his changeup, which shows some fade at 70 mph. In the field, he uses short arm action. Likely suited for third base or second base. Good lateral movement. Reached a top velocity of 76 mph. At the plate, he swings from the right side using a slightly open stance with a short stride. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Registered a top exit velocity of 79 mph. Ran a 4.9 out of the box.

Michael Warden, OF, Huber Heights HS, 2015

6-foot, 175-pound outfield prospect with athletic frame. Natural outfielder with excellent routes and reads. Made several impressive plays in game situations. Liekly projects as a corner outfielder at the next level. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Showed carry on accurate throws. Reached a top velocity of 86 mph from the outfield. At the plate, he starts in an athletic stance. Uses a minimal stride and load. Collapses a bit on his backside. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Ran a 4.62 out of the box.

Mitch Cromley, RHP, Bowling Green HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. Threw through high ¾ to over the top arm slot with some quickness and long arm action. Regular effort to his delivery. Fastball sat 80-81 mph on this occasion. Command will improve with more consistency on the front side. Breaking ball showed gradual 12/6 action at 70 mph. Changeup sat at 66 mph.

Noah Hayden, IF, Walsh Jesuit HS, 2015

5-foot-7, 160-pound infield prospect with small, thin frame. Uses short arm action through ¾ arm slot in the field. Reached a top velocity of 70 mph across the infield. Average hands and feet. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Tends to wrap in his load. Uses a short, level path to the ball. Contact type hitter that use the whole field. Registered a top exit velocity of 71 mph. Ran a 5.0 out of the box.

Noah Merle, 2B/OF, St. Xavier HS, 2016

6-foot, 160-pound prospect with thin, athletic frame. From the outfield, he showed short arm action through ¾ arm slot. Throws uphill. Reached to velocity of 80 mph. Shows average hands and feet. In the infield, he uses similar arm action. Reached top velocity of 76 mph. Tends to field on his heels. At the plate, the right-handed hitter tends to bar in his load. Uses a short stride. Takes long path to the ball. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph. Ran a 4.58 out of the box.

Patrick Mullinger, C, Moeller HS, 2016

5-foot-10, 165-pound catcher with strong, athletic frame. Established himself as one of the top catcher’s in his class. Physically mature for his age. From the crouch, he uses short arm action through high ¾ to over the top arm slot. Reached top velocity of 71 mph, which will improve in time. Accurate throws. Stays low through his throws. Pop times between 2.02 to 2.09. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a balanced, athletic approach. Smooth load with a small leg kick. Drove the ball to all fields in batting practice and game play. Takes slight uphill path with power in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee. Definite follow.

Spencer Howell, IF, Oakwood HS, 2015

5-foot-5, 130-pound infield prospect with small, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot in the field. Showed accuracy and a top velocity of 72 mph. Shows good lateral movement and footwork. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short, level path. Produced consistent line drives to the opposite field. Registered top exit velocity of 77 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.95 out of the box.

Tommy Murphy, C/1B, Walsh Jesuit HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect with athletic frame. Uses hsort arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Tends to wind up a bit in his transfer. Pop times between 2.16 to 2.26 with a top velocity of 70 mph from the crouch. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Good balance n his swing. Takes short, level path to the ball. Registered top exit velocity of 81 mph. Ran a 5.00 out of the box.

Trezdend Johnson, OF, Pickerington North HS, 2016

5-foot-10-, 170-pound outfield prospect with athletic frame. Uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot from the outfield. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph with some carry to his throws. Shows natural actions. Needs to continue getting comfortable playing through the ball. At the plate, he uses a short stride. Takes short, level path to the ball with line drive production to all fields. Ran a 4.36 out of the box.

Ty Phelps, LHP/OF, Meigs Local HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with ideal frame. Long, lanky arms and legs. Projects best on the mound at this stage. Mostly an arm strength guy at this stage. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed and short arm action. Fastball sat 80-83 mph, but tended to be straight and up in the zone. Also used a 67 mph breaking ball. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 80 mph. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Lower half tends to collapse. Takes level path to the ball. Registered top exit velocity of 77 mph. Ran a 4.53 out of the box.

Tyler Malish, C, Jefferson Area HS, 2016

5-foot-9, 150-pound catcher with small, thin frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Needs to continuing improving direction of feet and overall arm strength. Recorded pop times between 2.11 to 2.18. Reached a top velocity of 68 mph from the crouch. At the plate, he starts in athletic stance. Contact type hitter that should improve power as he physically matures.

Zac Morris, RHP/IF, Heath HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with tall, solid frame. Continues to physically mature and add strength to his frame. On the mound, he sat 80-82 mph from a high ¾ arm slot. Uses short arm action. A bit stiff, but shows some quickness in his arm. Relies on a 62-63 mph breaking ball with gradual 11/5 break. Tends to cuff the pitch. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 78 mph. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Projects as a corner type. In the infield, he projects as a corner type. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph across the infield. Needs to continue to improving footwork. At the plate, he starts in a wide stance from the right side. Minimal stride. Produces solid contact with slight uphill path to the ball. Showed occasional pull power. Registered top exit velocity of 79 mph. ran a 4.61 out of the box.

Zane Collins, LHP/OF, Ben Logan HS, 2015

5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect with strong, athletic frame. Projects as a pitcher at the next level. Threw on short rest. Shows long arm action with some quickness to his arm speed through a high ¾ slot. Fastball showed good run as he sat at 83 mph and touched up to 84 mph. Breaking ball sat at 69-70 mph with 1/7 break. Threw it for strikes, but tended to be up in the zone on this occasion. Also uses a 71 mph changeup with similar action to his fastball. From the outfield, he throws through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 82 mph with some carry to his throws. Good accuracy. Plays through the baseball. At the plate, he starts in a slightly closed stance from the left side. Uses a short stride. Good balance. Line drive type hitter. Registered top exit velocity of 89 mph. Ran a 4.84 out of the box.
