Ohio Underclass Games: Team 6 Player Analysis

Andrew Almquist, RHP, Lakota East HS, 2015

6-foot, 165-pound right-handed pitcher with lanky, athletic frame. Has come into his own over the past eight months and continues to get better each time that we see him. Uses quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat at 84 mph and reached up to 86 mph with some sink. Shows the ability to throw both off-speed pitches for strikes. Breaking ball sits at 67-69 mph with 12/6 action down in the zone. Also throws a 72-73 mph changeup. Sells the pitch well out of his hand.

Brady Brokamp, OF, Walnut Hills HS, 2016

6-foot, 135-pound outfield prospect with thin frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot with accuracy to his throws. Reached a top velocity of 79 mph. Plays through the baseball. Needs to continue improving foot speed. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts from a wide stance. Uses a short stride with more to come from his lower half. Short, level path to the ball. Line drive production. Registered a top exit velocity of 79 mph. Ran a 4.65 out of the box.

Brock Balderson, RHP/1B, Marlington HS, 2015

6-foot, 185-pound prospect with athletic, solid frame. Showed well as a pitcher and position player. On the mound, he throws quick short arm action and quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat at 82 mph and bumped up to 83. Showed occasional sink and consistently pounded the zone. Uses a 68 mph breaking ball with gradual 11/5 action. Also used a 65-68 mph changeup. Shows some fade to the pitch, but needs to maintain arm speed for full effectiveness. Defensively, moves well around the bag at first base. Quick transfer. Showed top velocity of 82 mph on his throws. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a leg kick in his load. Fluid swing with some quickness in the zone. Registered top exit velocity of 86 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.72 out of the box.

Collin Federer, 3B, Pickerington Central HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 170-pound infield prospect with strong frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 72 mph across the infield. Needs to continue improving quickness in his feet. At the plate, he starts in a crouch and slightly open. Uses toe tap with small leg kick in his swing. Will enhance power when he consistently clears the front side. Shows some strength in his hands. Registered top exit velocity of 82 mph. Ran a 4.34 out of the box.

Hunter Ackerman, OF, Madison Comprehensive HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 175-pound outfield prospect with long, athletic frame. Best tool is his bat. Uses balanced stance with a short stride. Minimal upper half load. Doesn’t show any wasted movement. Gets his hands into the loading zone. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Line drive production with some pull power in his swing. Overall fluid rhythm. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 4.31 out of the box. Defensively, he projects as a left field type. Shows some range, but needs to continue improving throwing mechanics. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph from a low ¾ arm slot.

Hyatt Shenefield, IF, Worthington Kilbourne HS, 2016

5-foot-7, 123-pound infielder with smallish frame. Projects as a second baseman at the next level. Throws through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with some accuracy. Reached top velocity of 70 mph. Needs to continue playing through the baseball and playing on the toes of his feet. At the plate, he starts in an athletic stance. Uses a short stride with a minimal upper-half load. Short, level path to the ball. Generated opposite field production in batting practice, but managed to spray the ball to both fields for hits in game play. Ran a 4.89 out of the box.

Jake Dennis, LHP, Licking Valley HS, 2016

5-foot-10, 175-pound southpaw with solid, athletic frame for his age. Shows average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Regular effort t his delivery. Fastball was straight on this occasion at 75-76 mph. Showed good depth and 1/7 break down in the zone on a 64-65 mph breaking ball.

John Malott, OF, Milford HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 160-pound outfield prospect with lanky, athletic frame. Continues to shows maturation in his body. Shows potential to play all three outfield positions, but likely destined for a corner spot. Athletic with natural feel for the position. Throws through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 82 mph with carry to his throws. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a small leg kick. Tends to wrap a bit in his load, which can create some length. Still shows some quickness in his bat speed. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Should only increase power as he adds muscle to his frame. Registered top exit velocity of 82 mph. Ran a 4.52 out of the box.

Kenton McKinley, 3B, Danville HS, 2016

5-foot-11, 160-pound third base prospect with strong, athletic frame for his age. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph with accuracy to his throws. Feet work at this stage, but shows some softness in his hands. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride with good use of his lower half. Shows some quickness in his hands through the zone. Registered a top exit velocity of 83 mph off the tee. Slight uphill path to the ball. Squared the ball up and showed some pull power. Ran a 4.77 out of the box.

Mitchell Bault, RHP, Moeller HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect with solid frame. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with short arm action and average arm speed. Fastball sat at 81 mph with straight action. Breaking ball showed gradual 12/6 movement at 70 mph. Changeup sat at 70-71 mph with good fade down in the zone. Showed command of the pitch, but needs to maintain fastball arm speed to maximize effectiveness.

Nathan Andorfer, 2B, Kenton Ridge HS, 2016

6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect with average frame. In the field, he shows short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 69 mph across the infield. Needs to continue improving footwork. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts from a tall stance. Should improve power with improved use of his lower half. Short, level path to the ball. Registered top exit velocity of 79 mph. Ran a 4.56 out of the box.

Nick Ernst, C/RHP/IF, La Salle HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect with solid frame. Throws with short arm action through ¾ arm slot in the infield. Reached top velocity of 75 mph. Threw well from all angles. Behind the plate, he uses similar arm action. Top velocity of 73 mph from the crouch. Needs to continue to improve mechanics to assist with accuracy. Pop times between 2.11 to 2.19. At the plate, he starts from an open stance. Tends to bar in his load. Short stride. Created solid contact. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.51 out of the box. On the mound, he sat 79-82 mph. Throws with average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Regular effort to his delivery. Relies on a 69-71 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed. Good fade down in the zone.

Patrick Lavelle, C, Hilliard Davidson HS, 2015

5-foot-9, 175-pound catching prospect with small, athletic frame. Shows good catch and receive skills for his age. Short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws w/top velocity of 73 mph out of the crouch. Stays low and through. Pop times between 2.04 to 2.09. Threw out a runner in game play. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts heavy on his backside. Needs to improve balance. Uses a toe tap and short stride. Contact type hitter but shows some quickness in the zone. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.71 out of the box.

Roger Danison, OF, Bloom Carroll HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 170-pound outfield prospect that is establishing himself as one of the top all-around outfielders in his class. Ideal, athletic frame. From the outfield, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 86 mph with accuracy. Showed some carry and throws downhill. Plays through the baseball and shows natural feel for receiving the ball. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance. Shows smooth load. Uses a short stride and good use of his lower half. Quick hands through the zone with slight uphill path. Shows some power in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 87 mph off the tee. Registered a 4.31 out of the box.

Ryan Pitts, RHP, Stow-Monroe Falls HS, 2015

5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed pitcher with average, athletic frame. Throws through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot with some deception. Shows a different look. Average arm speed with regular effort. Fastball sat at 77-79 mph with occasional sink. Relied on a 66 mph breaking ball with 10/4 action. Induced several bad swings from hitters in game play. Not over powering, but arm slot gave hitters trouble.

Ryan Lally, LHP/OF, Wooster HS, 2015

5-foot-9, 190-pound southpaw with average, solid frame. Shows potential as two-way player at the next level. Corner outfield type. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Shows some carry to his throws. Needs to continue quickening his transfer. At the plate, he in a crouch from a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride and good use of his lower half. Quick hands in the zone. Shows line drive production with some pull power. Fluid rhythm to his swing. Registered a top exit velocity of 86 mph. Ran a 4.78 out of the box. On the mound, he shows average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 80-81 mph with some natural cut. Uses a 68 mph breaking ball with 1/7, but tended to be up in the zone. Also showed a 73 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed with some fade.

Ryan Prendergrast, SS,  Springfield HS, 2016

5-foot-9, 160-pound infielder with average, athletic frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 69 mph across the infield. Average hands and feet. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a short stride. Partial use of his lower half. Short, level path to the baseball. Registered top exit velocity of 75 mph. Ran a 4.39 out of the box.

Sam Sustersic, OF, Revere HS, 2015

6-foot, 175-pound outfield prospect with solid, athletic frame and strong lower half. Shows good progress since last winter and has positioned himself as one of the top right-handed hitting outfielders in his class. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 84 mph from the outfield with carry to his throws. Quick, fluid footwork. Plays through the baseball and shows natural feel for the position. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts from a wide, open stance. Rotational type hitter. Big, physical prospect that showed the ability to use the whole field. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Pull power in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 94 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.47 out of the box. Definite follow.

Shane Smith, RHP, Elder HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with athletic frame. Throws with quick arm speed and long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Sat at 84 mph with more velocity to come. Easy effort to his delivery. Shows excellent command of three pitches. Locates fastball in and out. Uses late breaking 67-69 mph curveball with 12/6 action down in the zone. Still, his best-off speed pitch is his 72 mph changeup. Shows the confidence to throw the pitch in any count. Sells the pitch with excellent arm speed. Difficult to pick up out of the hand. Good fade down in the zone. Hitters struggled to make contact.

Stephen Hoendorf, C, Chaminade Julienne HS, 2016

6-foot, 190-pound catching prospect. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 67 mph from the crouch. Pop times between 2.25 to 2.33. Should continue to improve with better footwork and additional strength. At the plate, he starts in a tall stance. Uses an average stride. Minimal load with the upper half. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph off the tee. Pull tendencies in his swing. Ran a 4.83 out of the box.

Zane Harris, 1B, Madison Comprehensive HS, 2016

6-foot-4, 230-pound first baseman with big, thick frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ to over the top arm slot. Reached top velocity of 71 mph on his throws. Needs to continue improving foot speed. At the plate, the big left-handed hitter starts in a balance stance. Shows some wrap in his load. Maintains balance. Shows some quickness in his bat speed. Slight uphill path to the ball. Pull tendencies in his swing. Potential middle of the order type bat. Registered top exit velocity of 83 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.78 out of the box.
