Oregon All-Star Series: North - Hitters

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Corvallis, OR - Last weekend we were at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University for the 2019 Oregon All-Star Series. The 2-game set showcases elite senior players from the 5A and 6A classifications across the state. Notable alumni of the event include Dale Murphy, Scott Brosius, John Jaha, Harold Reynolds and Adley Rutschman. More information on the rich tradition of the series can be found HERE

2019 was the first opportunity Prep Baseball Report Oregon had to cover and scout the event. We finish our coverage with a release of our scout notes and video from the hitters on the North roster.

North - Hitters

CJ Rivers, 1B, Tigard (Cal Stata Bakersfield commit)
Went toe-to-toe with Decker Stedman in the HR derby and displayed above average power all weekend. Puts an athletic move on the ball with a high, aggressive leg kick and still manages to maintain control of his barrel. Lots of moving parts in the swing but they all sync up and allow him to tap into big-league raw power. Flashed some body control on defensive while fielding and handling throws at 1B. Light on his feet with some fluidity in his game. Plenty of arm strength for the position. One of the standout performers from the weekend.

Joe Angeli, C, Jesuit (High Point commit)
For our previous notes on Angeli earlier this spring, click HERE. A consistent performer and all-around gamer who just helped guide Jesuit to a Class 6A state title. Hits from a tall, relaxed stance with constant rhythm in his hands. Advanced approach at the plate with feel for the barrel allows him to spray contact to all fields based on where the ball is pitched. Quiet receiver who presents a big target behind the plate. Moves well laterally when blocking. Plays the game hard at all times.

Justin Hoover, C, West Linn (Linn-Benton CC commit)
Had one of the most consistent weekends of any hitter participating in the series. Big framed at 6-3, 195 pounds with the chance to add more strength. Mostly a gap to gap hitter at the moment but could see the power increase down the road as he develops. Stays tall throughout with a fluid, low effort swing. Keeps barrel flat thru zone with extension after contact. Defensively he fits well behind the plate. Hips stay beneath the ball when receiving. Arm action profiles well to catcher. Short and compact, producing consistent carry on all throws.

Gabe DeVille, C, Lake Oswego
Deville showed well at the Lake Oswego jamboree earlier this spring. For our previous notes on him, click HERE. Sturdy, muscular build at 5-10, 185 pounds. Shows quick hands from the left side. Working quickly to the ball with a compact, level swing. Stays till with a high finish thru contact. Saw time in LF over the weekend although he’s primarily a C. Clean, accurate arm from the OF with plenty of carry on throws. Overall, good athlete with some positional versatility.

Zach Hald, 1B, Southridge
Physical, developed frame at 6-2, 210 pounds. Flashed easy, low effort power during the HR derby. Consistently made loud contact during BP. Generates above average bat speed while keeping hands tight to the body. Maintains upright posture throughout. Defensively he moves well around the bag and profiles nicely to 1B. Quality footwork while exchanging on relay throws from the OF.

Kyle Dernedde, SS, Tualatin (Oregon State commit
Dernedde continued to show the hard-nosed, aggressive demeanor that we first saw from him back at the 2018 Area Code games. No matter what the situation or circumstances may be, he just always finds a way to contribute something positive to the game. Shows advanced strike zone discipline in the box and is always capable of finding barrel when he gets strikes to hit. Defensively, his quick feet and clean arm action will play at any INF position. Should be a fan favorite in Corvallis for many years to come.

Alex Claxton, SS, Clackamas (Lane CC commit)
Claxton maintained the high energy style of play that we saw earlier this spring in a showdown against Grant. For those game notes, click HERE. At the plate, his contact approach plays well in-game due to his above average speed. Puts a simple move on the ball and lets his quick hands work inside of the ball. Defensively he fits best at 2B but shows the actions and arm strength to move to the left-side if needed. Rangy defender with quick hands on the exchange into this throwing motion.

Caden Leiblein, SS, Hood RIver Valley (College of Idaho)
Displayed a consistent, line-drive approach throughout BP. Does a solid job of maintaining a flat barrel path thru the zone with a level finish. Stays balanced throughout. Strong framed at 6-foot, 185 pounds. Reliable defender who should stick in the INF with sound, low effort actions. Loose arm action. Ball stays true with plenty of carry.

Trevor Antonson, SS, Wilsonville (Seattle commit)
Showed impressive pop from his 5-10, 170 pound frame during the HR Derby. Twitchy type of athlete who generates easy bat speed. High finish after contact allows him to tap into some pull-side power. Defensively showed very quick feet with compact actions. Keeps momentum going towards target thru the throw. Capable of handling all INF positions.

Kenji Lamdin, 3B/RHP, Grant (Linn-Benton CC commit)
Strong framed at 6-2, 200 pounds. Profiles ideally to a corner INF spot. Hits from an upright, relaxed stance. Hands stay inside of the ball and allow him to hit for power to all fields. Disciplined approach at the plate with quality pitch recognition skills. Defensively, keeps everything simple and under control. Stays low for a taller defender and has plenty of arm strength to get across the diamond. Flashed control of a soft glove hand while funneling ball in.

Matthew Sebolsky, OF, Lake Oswego (George Fox commit)
For scout blog notes on Sebolsky, click HERE. Athletic outfielder who stays crouched as he gets into his load. Hands stay back and work quick to the ball. Contact type of approach, capable of spraying hits to all fields. Did a nice job of ranging to his left/right and getting around the ball in the OF. Light on his feet and stays under control when tracking down the ball. High release on arm action fits well in the OF.

Grant Schoen, OF, Clackamas (Pepperdine commit)
Quick-twitch, speedy type player who can consistently impact the game with his speed. Generates easy bat speed with a quick, compact stroke. Barrel works inside of the ball, producing hard line-drive contact during BP. Contact type of approach that plays well with his skill set. Above average speed in the OF. Quick defensive actions. High ¾ release. Arm produces consistent carry on accurate throws.

Will Bachman, OF, Grant
Hits from a tall, slightly open stance. Stays tall at contact with an uphill path to his swing. Showed feel for the barrel during his BP. Controlled, repeatable effort to his hitting actions in the box. In the OF, showed a long, fluid arm path on his throws. Throws were on the money throughout I/O. Does a solid job of redirecting feet towards target.

Sage Dunaway, OF, Sherwood (Pacific University commit)
Strong build at 5-10, 175 pounds. Stays upright and produces smooth, easy swing with controlled effort. Mostly line-drive contact during BP but he flashed the ability to lift and drive the ball during the HR derby. Stays short to the ball but gets extension after contact. Defensively he showed a long, loose arm action from a low ¾ slot. Whippy arm action at release. Long, easy strides when tracking down the ball.
