PBR Coverage: 2018 High School Season

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

We may still be in February, but spring is here.  The high school season is under way with several teams already playing scrimmages in preparation of the real thing in the next ten days.  As part of its continuing coverage, Prep Baseball Report will be expanding an already packed slate for baseball fans of North Carolina.

In just its second year of coverage, Prep Baseball Report has become the No. 1 source for news, coverage, scores, and player evaluations in the Tarheel state.  Today we take a brief look at some coverage PBR is looking forward to in 2018.

2018 Season Preview

A little over a month ago, PBR contacted coaches from across North Carolina, asking for information.  Every program that responded to PBR will have their 2018 season preview posted, prior to the beginning of their playing schedule.  The previews will begin to release on Monday February 19th.

PBR will also be looking at some individuals to watch.  This list will continue to grow as PBR will name a North Carolina Player of the Year at the conclusion of the year.

The goal of each program is to play into late May and have a chance to win it all in June.  We will take a look at programs that could be in contention to win their final game and dogpile in celebration.

Around The Bases

Continuing from 2017 is a very popular, daily segment entitled Around The Bases.  This blog will feature daily scores, along with selected highlights from around the state.  PBR staff will be attending games each day of the season, along with following information sent in from high school coaches, area college coaches, pro scouts, as well as following information on social media.  For true high school baseball fans, this will be a daily stop for scores and highlights.

PBR Player of The Week

Each week, PBR’s staff will sift through a mountain of information from across the state to award a weekly Player of the Week.  The weekly award will also feature an honorable mentions segment to highlight other players who have had big weeks.  Throughout 2017, this segment was a hit with college coaches and pro scouts as they work to cover the immense talent in North Carolina.

PBR / NCBCA Team Poll

For the 2nd year in a row, PBR will team up with the North Carolina Coaches Association to run the Team Poll.  PBR will gather high school coaches from each class and region, allowing them to vote in a bi-weekly poll for the Top 10 teams in each of the four classifications.  PBR gathers team records, information, and other notes allowing the coaches to make informed decisions.

PBR will also be working with the NCBCA to post stories highlighting North Carolina coaches and their efforts throughout the season.  This feature will be run by a former NC high school coach, who will be working to give baseball fans a glimpse into the work to build champions on and off the field.

Scout Blog

As PBR’s staff is working to cover games in 2018, player reports will be filed to the Scout Blog.  The purpose of the scout blog is to give college coaches and pro scouts information on the players PBR is able to see.  The blog will be written to highlight individual performances with statistical information on arm strength and run times.  Descriptions of hitters will include their physical attributes, setup, balance, and ability to find the barrel with authority.
