PBR Michigan Spotlight Game: Gull Lake vs Stevensville-Lakeshore DH

Stevensville - Stevensville-Lakeshore hosted Gull Lake Saturday in what has become a strong rivalry and the two teams split their doubleheader as Gull Lake took the first game by a score of 2-1 and Stevensville-Lakeshore won the second game 7-3.

Game 1

The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader saw a pitcher’s duel between 2016 RHP AJ Janssen (Gull Lake) and 2018 LHP Connor Brawley (Stevensville-Lakeshore).

After a quiet first inning, Lakeshore was able to get on the board in the second inning 2018 1B Tyler Mojsiejenko led off the inning with a double and after two talks with one out, 2017 OF/P Max Gaishin hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Mojsiejenko.

Brawley and Janssen cruised through the third inning with relative ease before Janssen had to work out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Lakeshore was able to load the bases after a lead-off walk and back-to-back one-out singles by 2017 IF Ryan Remus and Gaishin. Janssen then got 2018 IF Trey Thibeault to ground into a fielder’s choice to keep the runner from third from scoring and then ended the inning with a strikeout.

While Brawley was dominant throughout the entire game, Gull Lake was able to score a run in the fifth inning as 2016 IF/RHP Derek Bishop led off the inning with a single and was later driven in by 2016 IF/RHP Matt Ruge with a two-out single.

Gull Lake then scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as 2017 P/OF Jarrett Miller led off the inning with a double which was followed up by an intentional walk to 2016 C Drew Blakely, a Virginia commit. Brawley then got 2016 RHP/3B Caleb Scoles, a Toledo commit, to fly-out before he was able to induce a ground ball from Bishop that looked like it was going to be an inning ending double play, but Bishop was able to beat out the throw to first base and Miller rounded third base without hesitation and was able to score what proved to be the winning run.

Lakeshore was able to get a lead-off infield single from 2018 OF Sean Branch to start the seventh inning, and the pressure applied led to an overthrow. As the ball got past the first baseman, Branch took off for second base but Blakely was there to back it up and showed off his plus arm strength to throw out Branch at second base.

Janssen was able to finish his complete game performance as he stranded two baserunners. His counterpart, Brawley, also threw a complete game and finished with seven strikeouts while taking the loss.

Player of the Game - Derek Bishop: 2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI

Game 2

After a 1-2-3 inning by Lakeshore’s 2016 LHP Justin Soper, they were able to get on the board in the first inning after a one-out walk by Brawley who moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on a two-out single by Mojsiejenko.

Gull Lake responded in the second inning as Scoles led off the inning with a single and Bishop followed it up with a walk. 2017 P/IF/C Trenton Quartermaine laid down a sacrifice bunt that was overthrown and brought Scoles around to score. Bishop was then brought into score on a fielder’s choice from 2016 OF Harry Clancy.

After Gull Lake’s starter, Quartermaine, worked a 1-2-3 inning in the second, he was able to work around a bases loaded jam in the home half of the third inning and then had another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.

Lakeshore was finally able to figure him out in the fifth inning as they plated five runs highlighted by an RBI base hit by Thibeault and an RBI double by Brawley.

After Soper worked a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth, Lakeshore was able to tack on two more runs in the home half of the inning as Brawley scored on an RBI single from Mojsiejenko and 2016 C Zach Schultz scored on an infield error.

Gull Lake was able to score a run in the seventh inning as 2017 IF Brady Kunkel drove in Bishop with an RBI double, but it was not enough as Lakeshore was able to take the second game.

Player of the Game - Connor Brawley: 2-for-3, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB
