PBR New England Spotlight Game: Colchester vs Harwood Union

Colchester, Vt.- Derek Sanderson (RHP, 2016) hurled six strong innings and delivered a key two-run single at the plate to lead host Colchester (Vt.) High to a 7-1 win over Harwood Union High in the season opener for both teams at Saddlemeyer Field Thursday afternoon.

A Vermont Division I semifinalist with a 16-3 mark last season, Colchester begins 2016 ranked fourth in PBR's Vermont Preseason Power Rankings and Sanderson, an uncommitted right-hander, is a member of the Vermont PBR Preseason All-State Team.

Sanderson struck out the first six Harwood hitters and did not allow a hit until two outs in the sixth as the Lakers (1-0) built its early lead.

He finished with 12 strikeouts and walked two allowing an earned run without a hit in the third. The Highlanders scored its lone run on a lead off walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch and an infield grounder.

A RBI single by Alex O'Connell in the first put Colchester on the board and Sanderson delivered a two-out, two-run single in the second to make it 3-0.

The Lakers added two unearned runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth. They finished with five hits and stole several bases, and took advantage of  six walks issued by two Harwood pitchers.
