PBR New England Spotlight Game: Colchester vs South Burlington

South Burlington, Vt.  -- A two-run single by Tyler Peacock (1B, 2016) and a strong complete game effort by Derek Sanderson (RHP, 2015) lifted Colchester (Vt.) High to a 3-2 win over host South Burlington High Tuesday afternoon.

Colchester held on to win its eighth straight to improve to 10-2. The Lakers, who started the season 2-2, fell out of the latest PrepBaseballReport.com Vermont power rankings but certainly hopes to climb back into the poll.

South Burlington started its season 7-0 and was ranked second in the May 1 poll saw its record fall to 10-2. The Rebels, hit hard last year by graduation, remain one of the surprise teams in Vermont.

Sanderson, an uncommitted right-hander, used a 4-seamer and a 2-seamer to limit South Burlington to four singles while walking two and striking out four. He had the young Rebels off-balance all day throwing less than 85 pitches in recording the complete game victory.

Peacock, a lefty-swinging cleanup hitter, laced a two-out single up the middle to drive in two in the top of the first to make it 2-0.

They added another when Travis Boutin (2016 OF) doubled to center to lead off the second, and moved to third on a base-hit by Ryan Arel (2017 DH/OF/RHP).

Rebels shortstop Noah Barton (2017 SS) speared a line drive to start a double play for two quick outs before Connor Bell (C/RHP 2017) walked to put runners on the corners.

Boutin came in for the third run on an infield error before SB soph hurler John Thibeault (2018 RHP/1F) induced a force out to end the threat.

South Burlington's Cam Zagursky (2016 OF), who made several nice catches in center field, led the third with an infield single, the first hit of the game for the Rebels, stole second and scored on a two-out single pulled down the right field line by senior Henry Cunningham (2016 C), one of the top catchers in the state.

Sanderson retired 10 of the next 11 hitters including eight straight before senior Steven Levite (2016 1B) walked with one-out in the seventh. Pinch-runner Ryan Sargent (2018 OF) stole second and scored on a line single to left by Liam McMackin (2017 1B/RHP).

Sanderson bore down and retired the final two hitters on outfield pop-ups to hold on for the win.

Thibeault was the tough luck loser in a good effort on the mound. He went six innings allowing six hits, just two after the second, striking out seven and walked five. One of the three runs allowed was unearned.

Eamon Sheridan (2017 RHP/3B) hurled a 1-2-3 seventh in relief.
