PBR New England Spotlight Game: Wakefield vs Reading

The Rockets of Reading High were able to overcome three errors and five walks to hold of the Wakefield Warriors 4-3 in 8 innings.

Reading got on the board in their half of the 1st when senior center fielder Connor Mulligan and senior right fielder Carl Gillies reached on errors to start the inning. One batter later junior left fielder Corey DiLoreto ripped a single of left, scoring Mulligan.

Then Jordan reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Gillies to score, giving the Rockets a 2-0 lead.

After walking the bases loaded in the 2nd, Imbriano cruised through the remainder of his outing.

Jordan was cruising along as well until the top of the 4th when he walked senior center fielder Tighe Beck to start the frame. He then stole 2nd and 3rd, eventually scoring on an errant throw by Reading senior catcher Dan Sletterink.

After a strikeout, senior catcher Matt Mercurio and junior right fielder Will Shea reached on errors. A batter later junior first baseman Ben Coccoluto singled to the gap in right-center, plating Mercurio and tying the game at 2.

The Warriors would take the lead the following inning when Jordan walked the bases loaded and allowed junior shortstop Tim Hurley to score on a wild pitch, making the score 3-2.

Reading would tie the score in the 6th inning against senior LHP Max Marchino. Number 9 hitter and second baseman Nick O’Neil walked with two outs. Mulligan then ripped a single to left and Gillies followed suit, plating O’Neil to knot the game again.

It would stay tied through 7 innings with the pitching stepping up for both teams.

In the bottom of the 8th, senior third basemen Liam O’Neill lead off with a double to right-center for the Rockets.

Liam then moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there by the next two batters.

Chanley then intentionally walked Mulligan to set up the force play. Gillies was next and hit a slow roller to third that was misplayed, allowing O’Neill to score to give the Rockets the walk off victory in their first game of the season.

Senior RHP Tom White got the win in relief with 3 scoreless innings. Starter, Senior RHP Pat Jordan (U. Maine) went the first 5 innings, allowing 2 hits, 3 runs (1 earned) and 5 walks while recording 10 strikeouts.

Warriors starter, senior RHP Corey Imbriano (Northern Essex) also struggled with a high pitch count, lasting only 4 innings, giving up 2 unearned runs, 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. Senior Adam Chanley got the loss in relief after coming on in the 6th.
