PBR Ontario Spotlight Game: Great Lakes Canadians 18U vs Toronto Mets 17U

AJAX- A beautiful day to play two on the Victoria Day weekend brought the 2016 top ranked pitching prospect and #2 overall in Ontario in right-hander Austin Shields and the Great Lakes Canadians 18U to face the Toronto Mets 17U at Pan Am Ballpark. Both teams split the doubleheader 5-0 Mets and 6-2 Canadians.

Game one saw a few scouts in attendance to see Shields in what may be his final appearance in the province before next month’s MLB draft. Toeing the rubber for the Mets 17U was 2017 righty Hayden Malenfant.

The Mets right-hander finished with a 2-hit shutout and retired the final 11 batters he faced. Malenfant danced out of trouble in the 4th with runners in scoring position and one out with a strikeout and inducing a ground ball to end the inning. He kept the Canadians hitters off-balanced all day with 9 ground ball outs and five strikeouts to pick up the victory.

Shields struggled with his command in his 4 innings of work with four runs on two hits, five walks and two hit batters, while striking out four.

Credit the Mets lineup, they were facing one of the tougher pitchers in the province and showed patience at the plate. In the 3rd, with the bases loaded and no out, 2017 outfielder Adam Plouffe drove a sacrifice fly to deep centre field to drive in a run. Next batter, 2017 catcher Mitch Osborne lined an RBI single to left that gave the Mets a 3-0 lead. In the fifth, Osborne notched his second hit of the game with a double to the gap in left and later scored.

Game two saw the Canadians bats come to life with 2 runs in the first inning including an RBI double from 2017 outfielder Lucas Parente and triple from 2017 grad Jameson Hart. Hart finished the game 2-for-3 and added an RBI double in the third inning to help the Canadians earn a split.

Canadians uncommitted 2016 left-hander Michael Mommersteeg went 5 innings allowing two runs on six hits, no walks while striking out two and picking up the win.

Mets RHP Aidan Findlay went 6 innings plus one batter allowing five runs on 9 hits, one walk, and one hit batter while striking out four.
