We take a look at some scout blogs form the PBR South Carolina Summer Championships 17U and 16U in beautiful Charleston SC hosted at The Shipyard.  This event took place the weekend of 6/8/2023 - 6/11/2023 and was limited to 27 teams from the top organizations from up and down the East Coast.
SCOUT BLOG

Justin Sheffield (Power Baseball SC 2025 OF) Conway HS

Sheffield was able to collect two hits on the day. Sheffield breams with confidence and takes an aggressive approach at the plate. In his 1st AB took two aggressive hacks at FB that he couldn't quite get in fair territory. Got down 0-2 early and was able to battle the count back and get a contact single deep into the 6 hole showing some speed as well. Carries himself well on the field. Quick Hands at the plate with present power. Sheffield will be an exciting player to watch as he matures a little more.

Alex Robinson (Athletes Lab) LHP 2024

Tall/lean frame with projection visible. Long extension with high release point. Robinson got the FB up to 84 and sat 82-83. He was able to mix in a SL at 78. Has upside visible with frame and velo where it is currently. Whippy/loose arm. Located well within the zone with both the FB and SL and was able to produce soft contact while on the bump. Intriguing player to keep some eyes on.

BJ Jeter (USA Prime SC) 2024 Union County HS

Athletic frame in Jeter. The LHH put some nice swings on some balls throughout the game. Biggest AB that stood out was a 0-0 pitch on the outer half with RISP that he barreled into LF to grab an RBI. Shows good barrel control as well as quick hands through the zone. Has matured some more and developed into a more complete hitter from last viewing. Disciplined within the zone oftentimes not chasing even in pitcher counts.

Lane McGaha (Southern Athletics) 2024 1B Belton Honea Path HS

McGaha continues to hit the ball well every time PBR SC is in attendance. McGaha was able to collect 2 hits on the day with one being a long 2B to the deepest part of the park in LCF where it is 375. Shows above average power and has natural lift to the swing. Big/physical frame that looks to get extra base hits every AB. His 2nd AB he was able to pull another ball down the line for a hard single. Mainly pullside hitter but has ability to drive the ball backside if needed. Fun player to watch that may be a steal for a collegiate program looking for natural power.

Blake Bryant (SEB Prime) 2026 RHP

Bryant got the start on Day 2 and 8 AM and was ready from the get go. Only giving up 1 run in his appearance he showed a lot of horizontal movement on the FB with ASR. The FB was up to 86 sitting 82-85. He was able to mix in a SL at 73-74 and his best offspeed pitch was the CH 76-78 with good action. Would like to see him keep the CH down more in favorable counts. Lean/athletic frame with clean arm action. As he learns to control the movement on the FB this kid will be a tough arm to face throughout his young career.

Stephen Williams (Legacy) OF 2023

Could have easily been a Day 1 write up but wanted to see if Williams could replicate Day 2 and that he did. Above Average OF that shows great range and closing speed. Shows an average arm as well with accurate throws. At the plate shows twitchy actions with good bat speed and barrel control. On Day 2 he was able to collect some hits with one being a rope double into LCF. Balanced approach spraying LDs across the field. Confident player that is a typical top of the order bat.

Tanner Hardin (Southern Athletics) 2024 MIF Union County HS Wofford Commit

At the plate Hardin is a tough out for an opposing pitcher. Hardin makes the pitcher labor fouling balls off continuously oftentimes making the pitcher throw 8+ pitches each AB. The barrel control is obviously there. As a LHH shows good speed and gets down the line quickly putting pressure on infielders. Uses the entire field and barreled balls up both days with not a ton to show for it. It's evident that Hardin is going to be a good hitter in college given the tools he has. In the field Hardin plays an aggressive SS charging and getting rid of balls fairly quickly leaving no doubt to the umpires. He does struggle sometimes with accurate throws. Hardin is a competitive, hard-nosed player that will excel throughout his baseball career.

Logan Sulli 2024 LHP Legacy Baseball

Pitchability lefty that had a day on the bump. 6’3 185 pound frame with a strong lower half. Clean arm action with a long extension. Was able to mix 3 pitches effectively starting with the FB at 80-83. He mixed in the Ch at 73-74 and the CB at 69-70. Compact repeatable delivery. Held hitters to soft contact. Competitive arm on the bump that has upside and a bright future.

Treion McFarland 2024 C/OF Power Baseball Clemson Commit

McFarland makes it look easy. Treion showed why he is a Clemson Commit, barreling balls all throughout the tournament. McFarland has a wide stance that presents lots of power.  Very disciplined hitter and knows what he wants.  Hardest out of the game stealing multiple bags along with his hits. Treions biggest tool is his speed. He posted a 4.19 time to first base on a ground ball to the SS. He also posted a 3.8 to first on a bunt. Very aggressive on the base paths as well. At the plate he looks to stay middle/middle and has the power to take the ball out of the park at any time in the AB. Fun player to watch play the game and will continue to progressively get better and mature as a player.

Landon Fowler 2025 RHP Southern Athletics

Fowler has progressively gotten better with each outing that PBR has seen him. Early in the year he topped out at 90 but sat 84-85. During this game he topped out at 90 but sat 87-88 the majority of the game. The Fastball shows life with some hop to it. The biggest progression Fowler has made is with the SL at 76 it shows late hard bite and has become a go-to pitch for producing a lot of chases in favorable counts. Projectable frame with more time in the weight room. Displays a strong lower half with repeatable movements. Struggles with command at times but will progress with maturity.

Tyler June 2024 Power Baseball South Carolina Commit

Switch hitter that had a big day 4 for Power Baseball. His biggest game came in the semifinals where he was able to drive a ball into the Wando River to tie the game. G2G line drive hitter that looks to use all parts of the field. Above average speed with sneaky pop. Doesn’t miss his pitch when he gets it. Compact short swing with bat speed present.

Mason Salisbury 2024 C Power Baseball

One of the most underrated players in the state. Salisbury handles a pitching staff really well plus blocking and receiving the ball well. He is able to steal some critical strike calls throughout the game. Displayed pop times ranging 2.0-2.1 with accurate throws down the 2nd base. At the plate he's not going to wow you but gets the job done in big situations. Has present power with the physical frame. Bat control that allows him to drive the ball back side when needed too. RBI machine this weekend as he always came through for Power. Keep your eyes on this one this summer.

Quez Hadley 2024 RHP Power Baseball

Smaller/athletic frame who shows some fire on the mound. Quez hopped on the mound for two Power Baseball games. In both the games the FB topped out at 86 sitting 83-85. He mixed in a Slurve at 72-73. Struggled with command but when he was in the zone he produced a lot of swing and miss and soft contact. Fun player to watch compete as well. Carries himself well on the field and shows great body language when things don’t go his way.

Robert Manges 2024 LHP (USA Prime 17U)

Tough left hander to hit.  He does a good job hiding the ball and comes from straight over the top.  Topped out at 81 with the fastball so he doesn’t overpower with velocity but does a good job changing speeds and keeping hitters off balance.  Got soft contact early in at-bats which allowed him to pitch deep into the game.  Does a good job spotting all three of his pitches and will only get better with more experience.

Hunter Gomes 2024 RHP (Bodyshop)

Thursday was the first time seeing Gomes pitch since this same tournament last year and he has shown significant improvement.  He topped out at 86 with the fastball and pitched in the 83-85 range for most of the day.  Velocity stayed up deep into the game.  Offspeed pitch is a hard slider in the mid-70’s.  Has a clean delivery that he was able to repeat throughout the game and consistently located both pitches.  I would expect the velocity to keep increasing in the near future.

Gavin Hug 2024 RHP/UT (USA Prime 17U)

Have seen Hug play several times but Thursday was the best I have seen him look on the mound so far. Ran the fastball up to 86 early and was still pitching in the low to mid-80’s late in the game.  Changeup was in the 78-79 range and throws a breaking ball that is in the low-70’s.  Plays multiple positions defensively including Catcher and Outfield but I think pitching is going to be his ticket to the next level.  Look for him to have a big summer to get him ready for his Senior year at Greer.

James Peterson 2024 RHP (Carolina White Sox)

This was my third time seeing Peterson pitch with the first coming at last year's tournament and then again at an event earlier this year.  He has turned into one of my favorites to watch.  The tall right hander is a difficult at-bat for right handed and left handed hitters.  He has a lower arm slot that is somewhere between side-arm and three-quarters.  The FB has plenty of life on it in the low to mid-80’s and has very good feel for a changeup in the mid-70’s.  His slider gets swings and misses and has serious break.  I look forward to seeing his progression the rest of the summer and can’t wait to see where he ends up.

Eli Headley 2026 C (Greenville Titans)

We first saw Headley catching for Riverside in the preseason tournament at Shipyard and he impressed for a Freshman.  We have also seen him at an event already this summer and he has improved since the spring.  He had a big tournament this weekend for the Greenville Titans.  The young Catcher swings the bat well and does a good job behind the plate.  Throws a 2.0-2.1 to 2nd and does a good job blocking balls in the dirt.  If he keeps growing and picks up some power in the bat, he will be a very dangerous player in the Riverside lineup down the road.

Diego Patrick LHP 2025 (Rays Scoutz)

Patrick is a promising young lefty in the 2025 class.  We got to see him on Friday morning and he displayed some impressive stuff on the mound. The 6’3 180 frame definitely makes him projectable going forward.  Fastball is in the low 80’s with a slider that is anywhere from 68-71.  Moves the arm slot around and can be dominant with a little more consistency.

Luke Godwin 2025 RHP/UT (Southern Athletics 2025 Orange)

We saw Godwin have multiple big performances this season for the Greenwood Eagles and he continued on that path early on this summer.  The at-bats that we saw from him on day 2 of the Summer Championships were as impressive as any that we saw all day.  He didn’t have much luck but put the barrel on multiple pitches and hit some of the furthest balls we saw all weekend with a wood bat.  Godwin has a compact swing and has plenty of power for a kid his size. Has a bright future on the mound as well.

Henry Thomas 2026 OF (Rays Scoutz)

Thomas hits in the middle of a very good Rays Scoutz lineup and is one of the most projectable hitters I have seen in the 2026 class this year.  Solid frame and should continue to fill out in the coming years.  Controls the barrel well with a compact swing and drives the ball out in front of the plate.  Saw him get the barrel out front on multiple pitches throughout the week including an RBI single Saturday morning.  Interested to see how he develops.

Cade Norton 2024 C (Athlete’s Lab)

Norton is one of my favorite players to watch because of the way he plays the game.  He enjoys playing and that shows with his confidence at and behind the plate.  He had a huge high school season for Blue Ridge and picked up right where he left off this summer.  He had multiple extra-base hits on Saturday afternoon including hitting a ball that almost got out of left field.  He does a good job receiving behind the plate and is one of the better catch and throw guys that I saw this season.  Shouldn’t be long before somebody scoops him up.

Luke McKitrick 2025 INF/RHP (USA Prime 16U)

McKitrick has grown quite a bit over the past year and has turned into a very interesting prospect to follow.  The size has led to serious power potential at the plate as he put good swings and barrels on multiple balls Saturday afternoon.  He also does a good job at 3B as we saw him make a very impressive backhanded play and has an above average arm for a 2025.  Also came into pitch at the end of the game and had a solid inning of work.  Will definitely be following the rest of the summer and next high school season.
