PBR Spotlight Game: #24 Canton South vs Edgewood

Canton South scraped out the tying run in the fifth inning and scored the game winner in the eighth inning to defeat a very game Ashtabula Edgewood 2-1.

Edgewood got an early lead when junior shortstop Matt DiDinato got hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He was then advanced to second on a single to left field by junior catcher Jake Bleill and advance to third by sophomore first baseman Josh Bleill. DiDinato then scored on a ground out by junior DH Aaron Partridge, to give Edgewood a lead in the low scoring game.

Edgewood starting pitcher, sophomore right-hander Marcus Ernst made it look like the run was going to stand as he carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Senior right fielder Austin Ness led off the inning with a walk and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman Mike Russell. Junior DH Ty McKinney then got a big RBI single to left-center field. After an infield error which gave Canton two runners on base with one out, Ernst got two big outs from the top of the Canton South line-up.

Canton senior right-hander meanwhile was pitching a very good game himself as he kept his team close allowing only four hits the final seven innings of the game.

Senior CF DJ Wilson took the game over in the eighth inning as he reached safely on a misplayed pop-up in which he turned into a hustle double. After a pop out to the catcher; Wilson stole third base then scored on a well-executed safety squeeze by senior Garret Crum.

The scrappy Edgewood team had no answer as they went down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game. Edgewood ended the season with a 13-13 record and a District Championship.

Canton South advanced to Friday’s regional championship with a 23-7 record.
