PBR Spotlight Game: No. 22 Brecksville Broadview Heights vs. No. 4 Amherst

AMHERST, OHIO - Brecksville hit their way to a 14-4 conference victory over Amherst on a beautiful but very windy day in Amherst.

Both teams entered the game at 10-0 overall and undefeated in conference play and both teams played a tightly contested game despite the final score.

Brecksville got on the board first off Amherst starter and Stanford commit Griffin Weir. The Bees used four hits and a hit batsman to score four runs off Weir, whose fastball was consistently 88-91 mph despite a strong wind in his face.

The big hits came off the bats of senior shortstop Paul Karthan (two-run double) and senior third baseman Dan Pushpak (solo homerun).

Brecksville then added two more in the third on a solo home-run by senior center fielder Joe Houk and a walk and an error by the Amherst defense.

Amherst fought back with four of their own runs in the bottom of the fourth, using four hits, two hit batsman, and a Brecksville error to score their runs. Senior left fielder Brandon Chesmar added the big hit with a two run double in the gap. The potentially game changing inning was thwarted when a one-out bases loaded situation ended with a double play by senior second baseman Nate Korczynski, who tagged the base runner crossing his face then flipped to first. This kept the Brecksville lead in tact at 6-4.

The Amherst offense never rebounded, but the Brecksville offense didn’t sit still as they put together an eight run sixth inning off of a slew of Amherst relievers, turning a tight game into a ten run mercy rule in one inning.

The Bees got eight hits in the top of the sixth with Karthan getting two single as the Bees batted around.

Brecksville’s starting pitcher, right-hander Perry Dellavalle, finished what he began with a shutout bottom of the inning.
