EUCLID, OH – In the Division III Ohio baseball tournament, Wickliffe HS squared off against Andover Pymatuning Valley.

It was the visitors, Wickliffe, who struck first on the scoreboard.

In the top of the first inning, the leadoff hitter senior catcher Matt Sherlock started the game off with a triple over the center fielder’s head due to some help with the wind blowing straight out. Senior first baseman Anthony Janosky laced a two hop triple off the right center-field wall to drive in Sherlock for the first run of the game. The next hitter, senior right-fielder Ethan Nobbe, followed with a sacrifice fly to center field making it a 2-0 ball game after one.

In the top of the second inning, Wickliffe added an additional run coming from an RBI single off the bat of Sherlock making it a 3-0 ballgame after two innings.

The final run from Wickliffe came in the top of the fourth inning via a sacrifice fly to the right-fielder from sophomore left-fielder Steven Young making it a 4-0 game after four.

The Pymatuning Valley bats were silenced by Wickliffe sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Wilson who shut down Pymatuning through 6 2/3 innings. He did a tremendous job of throwing strikes and mixing up his pitches to keep opposing batters off-balance. He was backed up by flawless defense.

However, Pymatuning did not want to go down teasy and made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning.

A leadoff double coming from shortstop Jon Burford would ignite the flame. An RBI triple from Mason Lipani would register the first run for Pymatuning making it 4-1. A ground ball to the first baseman off the bat of centerfielder Warrn Kozlowski would make it a 4-2 game.

Wickliffe made a pitching changing sending in reliever left handed-pitcher Janosky, who was playing first base. He ended the Pymatuning threat by getting a fly out to their center fielder ending the game for a final of 4-2 in favor of Wickliffe.

Wickliffe starting pitcher Wilson logged 6 and 2/3 innings giving up six hits, striking out three, and scattering three walks.

Janosky went 1 for 1 with a triple and three walks. Sherlock would go 2 for 4 with a triple, single, and an RBI

For Pymatuning Valley, catcher Chase Thurber and Burford each hit a double. Mason Lipani went 1 for 2 with an RBI triple to lead their team.
