Player Analysis: Team Royal from the Top Prospect Games

Previously, we release the complete statistical analysis from the 2013 Top Prospect Games. 

Adam McDonough, 1B/3B, Lakota East HS, 2014

6-foot, 215-pound corner infield prospect with big, solid frame. Registered an 8.03 60-yard dash. Best suited for first base at the next level. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph on his throws across the infield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in a slight crouch. Uses a short stride with decent use of his lower half. Showed quick bat speed through the zone. Registered a top exit velocity of 90 mph off the tee. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Displayed pull power in his swing.

Aron Mowery, RHP/IF, Marysville HS, 2014

5-foot-7, 170-pound smallish, athletic prospect. Registered a 7.19 60-yard dash. Right now, shows most potential on the mound. Throws through ¾ arm slot with short arm action. Shows some quickness in his arm. Fastball sat 83-85 mph. Also used a 66-67 mph curveball and a harder 72-73 mph slider. In the field, he projects best as a second baseman. Tends to windup in transfer. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a balance stance. Uses a short stride. Takes short, level path to the ball. Registered exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee.

Billy Ritter, RHP, Eaton HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed pitcher with big, solid build. Throws with long arm action through over the top arm slot. Displays a choppy rhythm to his delivery. Tendency to collapse and sit on back-side. Fastball was straight  at 81-83 mph. Showed a 72-73 mph breaking ball.

Blake Swanger, RHP, CHCA, 2014

6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed pitcher will tall, lanky frame. Pitches out of the stretch. Uses over the top arm slot with average arm speed and long arm action. Delivery requires some effort. Fastball sat 80-82 mph. Breaking ball fluctuated between 66-70 mph with soft break. Also showed a 69-70 mph changeup.

Brian Bullock, RHP, Loveland HS, 2014

6-foot, 180-pound right-handed pitcher with solid build. Uses short arm action through an over the top arm slot. Uses a quick tempo on the mound. Fastball sat at 82-84 mph with occasional arm side run. His breaking sat between 66-69 mph while his changeup was 74-76 mph with some fade. Delivery requires regular effort. Filled up the zone with strikes.

Drew Morrison, LHP, Licking Valley HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 183-pound southpaw with solid build. Cross-body type thrower. Lands closed which creates sequencing issues in his delivery. Fastball sat 81-83 mph. Breaking ball sits 65-67 mph with gradual 1/7 break. Looked most comfortable locating the pitch back door on right-handed hitters.

Evan Lee, IF/OF/RHP, Lexington HS, 2014

6-foot, 185-pound versatile prospect with strong, athletic build. Registered a 7.68 60-yard dash. Showed best in the outfield as a corner outfield type. Reached a top velocity of 85 mph on his throws. Uses short arm action with some carry on his throws. In the infield, he projects as a second baseman or corner type. Needs to keep improving footwork and consistency receiving the baseball. At the plate, he shows some balance in his swing. Uses leg kick trigger. Takes uphill path to the ball. Line drive hitter that showed power to all fields and quick bat speed (90 mph exit velocity off the tee).

Grant Schuermann, LHP, Lakota West HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 195-pound southpaw with solid build. Committed to Furman shortly after the event. Uses clean, repeatable mechanics. Fastball sat 80-83 mph with slight run to it. Locates well on both sides of the plate. Uses a 71-72 mph curveball with 1/7 break and good depth. Shows a 75 mph cutter as well as a 71-72 mph changeup with excellent fade. Shows the ability to consistently change speeds and miss bats.

Hunter Losekamp, C, Milford HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 228-pound catcher with physically impressive body. Looks the part. Registered a 7.59 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he uses short arm action. Displayed good receiving setup and receive skills. Registered 2.06 to 2.09 pop times. Will only get better as he improves his glove to hand exchange. Showed carry on his throws to second base. Registered a top velocity of 81 mph from the crouch. At the plate, he starts in an athletic stance. Uses a short stride with good use of his lower half. Shows some bat speed with 83 mph exit velocity off the tee. Line drive type production with occasional pop in his swing. Has emerged as one of the top catching prospects in Ohio’s class of 2014.

Jase Grosjean, OF, Archbold HS, 2014

5-foot-8, 135-pound outfielder with thin frame. Registered a 7.09 60-yard dash. Throws uphill from the outfield. Registered a top velocity of 74 mph. Shows some athleticism in the field, but needs to improve fluidity of footwork. At the plate, the left-handed hitter is a contact type. Starts with a closed stance. Takes uphill path to the ball. Registered a top exit velocity of 71 mph. Needs to improve strength for the next level.

Jacob McJilton, IF, Home School, 2014

6-foot, 170-pound infield prospect with athletic build. Registered a 7.34 60-yard dash. Shows fluid footwork and good routes to the ball. Uses short arm action through ¾ arm slot. Shows accurate throws and top velocity of 74 mph across the infield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in a crouch setup. Uses short stride. Tends to collapse the backside and shows head movement through the swing. Contact type hitter at this stage. Registered top exit velocity of 78 mph off the tee.

Joe Walton, C, Xenia HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 170-pound receiver. Registered a 7.87 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he starts with a compact stance. Uses short arm action and throws through over the top arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 71 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.25 to 2.33. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a tall stance. uses a smooth, quiet load with a short stride. Little wasted movement. Squared up the baseball with slight uphill path.

John Malott, OF, Home School, 2014

6-foot-1, 170-pound outfield prospect with long, lanky frame. Registered a 7.35 60-yard dash. Corner outfield type. Displayed strong defensive skill set. Used long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Showed accuracy on his throws with some carry. Reached top velocity of 81 mph from the outfield. Showed fluid footwork and approached the ball with confidence. At the plate, he starts with a tall, open setup. Swing path can get a bit long as he has a tendency to wrap during his load. Still, shows some strength in his swing. Registered top exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee.

Josh Hollander, IF/OF, Moeller HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 155-pound athletic prospect that shows the athleticism and tools to play several positions at the next level. Registered a 6.65 60-yard dash. Shows fluid footwork in the field with a quick transfer. Consistently plays through the baseball and takes good routes to the ball. Throws well from all angles. Registered a top velocity of 79 mph across the infield. Has the ability to play outfield as well. At the plate, he starts with an open stance. Uses a short stride and maintains balance in his swing. Uses the whole field with some pop in his bat. Registered a top exit velocity of 89 mph velocity off the tee. Established himself as one of the top position players in Ohio’s class of 2015.

Kegan Lanter, C/OF, Thomas Worthington HS, 2014

5-foot-8, 175-pound prospect with short, solid build. Registered a 7.16 60-yard dash. From behind the plate, he registered 2.24 to 2.32 pop times. Uses short arm action with some accuracy on his throws. From the outfield, he uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Needs to continue to improve footwork and playing through the baseball. Reached top velocity of 73 mph. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows balance in his swing. Uses a short stride with a small load. Shows the ability to hit to all fields with a level path to the ball. Line drive type hitter that will hit for average at the next level. Registered a top exit velocity of 82 mph off the tee. 

Luke Glischinski, RHP, Kings HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Throws with short arm action and average arm speed through over the top arm slot. Fastball sat 79-83 mph with some sink to it. Used a 64-65 mph breaking ball with 11/5 break and good depth. However, he tends to slow down his arm action. Also showed a 71-72 mph slider. Needs to improve repeatability of his delivery.

Matthew Fowler, LHP, Kings HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed pitcher with tall, lanky frame. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with average arm  speed. His fastball sat 83-85 mph and ran up to 87 mph. Showed occasional run. Needs to continue improving secondary pitches. He displayed a 72-73 mph breaking ball that tended to be flat. Uses slow tempo. Needs to accelerate the lower half and keep a good, repeatable rhythm to his delivery.

Matt Smith, OF, Olentangy Orange HS, 2014

5-foot-10, 165-pound outfield prospect. Registered a 7.20 60-yard dash. Corner outfield type. Registered top velocity of 76 mph on his throws. Uses short arm action from over the top arm slot with average footwork. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a small leg kick with a short stride. Tends to wrap his bat during his load, which creates a longer path to the ball. Takes uphill path. Shows occasional pull power in his swing.

Nick Pauley, RHP, Thomas Worthington HS, 2014

6-foot-5, 210-pound right-handed pitcher with tall, solid frame. Uses quick arm speed with short arm action through high ¾ to over the top arm slot. Tall and fall type delivery. Fastball sat 84-86 mph and ran up to 87 mph with some sink to it. Showed a 71-73 mph breaking ball with 10/4 break and a 72-73 mph changeup. Consistently in the zone. Needs to enhance lower half to maximize potential and size.

Noah Pierce, RHP, Toledo Central Catholic HS, 2014

6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed pitcher with tall, lanky frame. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed. Fastball sat 79-81 mph. Tends to slow down his arm action with his breaking ball, which sits 66-69 mph and has gradual 10/4 break. Needs to maintain balance throughout delivery. Tendency to throw across his body.

Sam Bordner, RHP/1B, Bloom Caroll HS, 2014

6-foot-6, 220-pound prospect with tall, solid build. Projects as a pitcher at the next level. Throws with above average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 83-86 mph with good arm side run. Breaking ball was 69-72 mph with 11/5 break. Showed the ability to consistently locate the pitch for strikes. Also used a 77-78 mph changeup, but has tendency to slow down arm action. After transferring high schools, Bordner wasn’t allowed to play this spring. Still, he stands out as one of Ohio’s top arms in the Class of 2015. As he improves the use of his lower half, he will continue to add more velocity. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance and uses a short stride. Uses quick bat speed (90 mph exit velocity off the tee) and shows pull power in his swing.

Stuart Schley, 3B/1B, Orrville HS, 2014

6-foot-1, 200-pound corner infielder with solid build. All around solid baseball player that understands how to play the game. Registered a 7.73 60-yard dash, but plays much faster on the bases and in the field. Big time left-handed bat at the plate. Used a wide stance in his setup with a smooth load. Shows explosive lower half and uphill path to the ball. Gets some serious lift on the baseball. Showed pull power with the ability to be a consistent threat for extra base hits. Registered top velocity of 90 mph exit velocity off the tee. In the field, he showed good form with his hands and his feet. Displayed accurate throws with top velocity of 76 mph. One of the top position players at the 2013 Top Prospect Games.

Wes Noble, RHP, Lebanon HS, 2014

5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Throws with quick arm speed and long arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 86-88 mph with limited movement on this occasion. Delivery requires some effort. Breaking ball sat 71-74 mph with late, 11/5 action.

Wyatt Myers, LHP, Waynesville HS, 2014

6-foot, 196-pound southpaw with average, solid build. Throws with long arm action and average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 79-80 mph with occasional cutting action. Uses a 71-72 mph slider with 1/7 type break.

Zach Temple, RHP, Lexington HS, 2014

6-foot-4, 215-pound right-handed pitcher with big, solid build. Uses short arm action with slow arm speed through an over the top arm slot. Fastball sat 72-73 mph. Showed side spin on 58-69 mph breaking ball.
