With opening day of major league baseball underway, baseball around the country is in full swing. The Louisiana high school season is more than halfway over and the playoffs are just around the corner. It is time for the next update of the Prep Baseball Report Power 25 rankings.

This edition sees loads of shake up, and two districts put in nine teams alone. It would not be a bold statement to say that district 3-5A is the most loaded district in the state, if not the entire southeastern United States. 3-5A lands five teams in the Power 25 and four in the top 10 alone.

Sulphur HS, out of 3-5A remains undefeated and No.1 in the Power 25 at an astounding 24-0. Can Sulphur run the table in the regular season? It will be difficult as they are set to play No. 8 Lafayette HS, No. 5 Barbe HS, No. 9 Sam Houston HS, and No. 25 Acadiana HS.

Although district 3-5A looks as though it has shifted power from 9-5A (“The Catholic League”) as the deepest district in Louisiana, the Catholic League remains strong. With four teams cracking the Power 25: No. 12 Holy Cross HS, No. 14 Jesuit HS, No. 18 Brother Martin HS, and a surprise contender No. 19 Rummel HS, the Catholic League looks to bring back a title to the state’s largest city.

With Sulphur HS at 24-0, the 9-5A district race is creating more intrigue as it should be a tight race down the stretch. Defending champion No. 18 Brother Martin is a talented club with high-level arms, but their youth and inexperience has caused some growing pains early in the district race. Perennial powerhouse and No. 14 Jesuit HS has been up and down of late. They have high-level young players battling for playing time and experiencing the natural ups and downs of being inexperienced. Uncommitted senior right-hander and ace of the staff, Jack Burk, has shown some signs of fatigue late in the season. As his inning load is tallying up, Burk’s velocity has dropped significantly in his last two outings. In a hard-fought win against No. 18 Brother Martin, Burk was pitching 78-81 in the last few innings, a far cry from his usual 85-88 mph range, not to mention command has been issue as he walked seven that night. The Blue Jays will most definitely need the depth of the pitching staff to step up the remainder of the season. No. 12 Holy Cross and No. 19 Rummel have both gotten out to scorching starts. The Tigers have quality hitters throughout the lineup and strike throwers on the bump. It seems as though things are clicking for the Tigers and they look to build momentum heading into the home stretch. No. 19 Rummel had some early-season failure, but it is obvious that playing a high-level of competition has brought their level of play up tremendously. The Raiders have battled against the best teams in the state, and look to be a force to reckon within the Catholic League moving forward.
