Pre Season Preview - Basic Academy

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

Basic Academy has played in the last three state championship games.  Head coach, Scott Baker seems to always get the most out of his Wolves and this season will be no exception. They play a lot of games together throughout the year, providing some younger players an opportunity to grow and mature on the field. They return eight starters and plenty of pitching.  The Wolves could very well make their fourth consecutive state championship game appearance.

2019 Outlook: Under the guidance of Head Coach Scott Baker, the Basic Academy Wolves have enjoyed a lot of success. Coach Baker returns 8 starters, including go to starter, Shane Spencer.  Spencer missed most of last season due to an injury but is throwing the ball well and can dominate a game from the mound. They will miss the likes of CJ Dornak, Jesse Fonteboa and Nick Thompson, but expect the Wolves to find some worthy replacements. Seniors, Kai Symonds and Jaden King will likely need to take on more prominent roles while Trace Evans and Zach Hose perform double duty. Evans should assume a spot in the rotation. Sophomores, Daniel Clayton and Hunter Katschke could see important action as well.

Offensively and defensively, opponents won’t see much of a difference. The Wolves will feel the loss of Jesse Fonteboa but appear reloaded and ready to wage an accomplished attack.  In addition to third baseman Kyle Turner (.431/1/21), John Howard Bobo (.366/1/18), and Zach Hose (.361/1/12) should provide a formidable middle of the order attack. Dominik Taverez (.333/0/19) and Dalton Miller (.304/0/8) offer potential table setters. Although senior Trace Evans hit .248, he plated 20 and is capable of having a big year.

Coach Baker produces disciplined, hard-nosed competitors that play well as a team.  The normally tight Southeast Division of the Desert Region could be a two horse race but surprises could loom with first year head coaches at Green Valley and Liberty.
