Preseason All-State: Outfielders Analysis







On Saturday, February 20th, we hosted the annual Preseason All-State showcase at Lawrence North HS in Indianapolis.  A total of 78 players from across the state participated in the event


Below is a look at outfielders who participated in the event.

Top Outfielders

Michael Brewer, OF, Snider HS, 2018: 6-foot-1, 165 pounder ran a 6.65-60 and was 90 from the OF. Loose, high ¾ arm action with life. Shows plus actions from the OF with athleticism.  Soft hands, quick, fluid feet. Plays through the baseball. Offensively, hits from a balanced setup.  Hands drop during the load.  Long stride, good use of the lower half.  Good balance.  Quick hands with bat speed.  Regularly gets to extension.  Uphill swing plane.  High exit velocity of 90 mph. 

Drey Jameson, OF, Greenfield Central HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pounder ran a 6.68-60 and was 92 from the OF from a loose, high ¾ arm action.  Good life on his throws.  Athletic actions in the field with quick feet.  At the plate shows quick twitch with quick hands.  Average use of the lower half, tendency to dive.  Fair approach.  Line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 85 mph.  

Ben Nisle, OF, Lake Central HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 180 pounder ran a 6.66-60 and was 90 from the OF. Long, over the top arm action with good carry on his throws.  Possesses soft hands with fluid feet.  Clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball with some athleticism.  At the plate hits from an open stance.  Loads back.  Slight leg kick.  Average use of the lower half, tendency to over rotate. Coils. Good balance.  Quick bat speed.  Long swing path, line drive hitter.  High exit velocity of 94. 

Bo Richey, OF, Brebeuf HS, 2017: 6-foot, 200 pounds, ran a 6.78-60 and was 80 from the OF.  Long, high ¾ arm action with some accuracy.  Sure hands, average footwork. Clean exchange.  At the plate hits from a wide, balanced setup.  Smooth load, short stride.  Tends to over rotate.  Good balance.  Possesses quick bat speed.  Good approach at the plate.  Short, level path.  Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm.  High exit velocity of 90 mph. 

Matt Olovich, OF, Guerin Catholic HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, ran a 7.28-60 and was 86 from the OF.  Long, loose high ¾ arm action with some carry and accuracy. Gets down hill on his throws.  Sure hands.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup.  Smooth load, short stride.  Good use of the lower half with good balance.  Appears to have added strength. Above average bat speed.  Short, level path, gets to extension.  Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm.  High exit velocity of 91 mph.

Nicholas Barrett, OF, Terre Haute North HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pounds, ran a 6.88-60.  Short, ¾ arm action up to 80 mph.  Possesses quick feet, sure hands.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup, loads back.  Short stride using a leg kick.  Average use of the lower half.  Fair approach. Choppy rhythm.  Tends to cut himself off.  High exit velo of 83 mph. 

Nick Coy, OF, Center Grove HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 175 pounds.  Ran a 7.30-60 and was 81 from the OF.  Short, high ¾ arm action with some accuracy.  Average strength.  Possesses average hands in the field. Average feet.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup, drops hands during the load.  Above average bat speed.  Ability to get to extension, uphill swing plane.  Early rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 75 mph. 

Jeremias Dela Cruz, OF, Columbus North HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 180 pounder ran a 7.53-60 and was 80 from the OF. Sure hands in the field, long exchange. Offensively hits from an open, crouch setup.  Drops hands during the load. Partial rotation with the lower half.  Fair approach.  Average bat speed, uphill swing path.  Choppy, late rhythm.  High exit velocity of 83.   

Dustin Dowden, OF, Lapel HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 140 pounder ran a 7.77-60 and was 79 from the OF.  Short high ¾ arm action with average hands.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup, loads back.  Short stride.  Good balance, average use of the lower half. Short path, slightly uphill swing plane.  Line drive type hitter.  High exit velocity of 78 mph.  

Korry Drum, OF, Columbus North HS, 2017; 5-foot-8, 155 pounder ran a 6.95-60 and was 81 from the OF from a long, high ¾ arm action.  Showcased fluid feet with sure hands.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup using a smooth load back.  Short stride.  Stiff backside.  Average bat speed. Short path to the baseball, line drive type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 81 mph.  

Owen Hallas, OF, Chesterton HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 165 pounder ran a 6.63-60 and was 79 from the OF.  Short, ¾ arm action with some accuracy.  Hits from a crouch with wide feet.  Short stride.  Backside collapses.  Average bat speed.  Line drive type hitter.  High exit velocity of 82. 

Jacob Heuchan, OF, Franklin HS, 2017: 6-foot, 170 pounder ran a 7.50-60 and was 82 from the OF.  Has some stiffness in the arm action, throws from a ¾ slot, showed good accuracy.  Average hands in the field.  At the plate possesses quick hands.  Uses a leg kick, tends to dive.  Good approach.  Short path.  Hard contact to his pull-side.  Line drive type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 91.

Evan Huffman, OF, Southern Wells HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 190 pounder ran a 7.12-60 and was 82 from the OF. Long, high ¾ arm action.  Average hands with fluid footwork.  Exchange is clean and plays through the baseball.  Offensively, this form a balanced setup.  Loads back.  Minimal load. Toe tap, short stride. Heavy front side. Twitchy actions.  Above average bat speed. Short, level path.  Gap to gap power.  High exit velocity of  89. 

Cameron Martin, OF, Brownsburg HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 150 pounds.  Ran a 6.89-60 and was 81 from the field.  Showcased above average hands with fluid feet.  Clean exchange.  Plays through the ball.  At the plate this from a tall setup using a short stride.  Over rotates with the lower half.  Average bat speed.  Long, uphill swing path.  Late rhythm.  High exit velocity of 81.  

Damon Maynard, OF, Greenwood HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 170 pounder ran a 7.37-60 and was 89 from the OF. Loose, high ¾ arm action with some carry.  Good accuracy on his throws.  Quick fluid feet.  Clean exchange.  Plays through the ball with some athleticism.  Offensively, hits out of a wide, open setup.  Smooth load with a short stride. Dives at times.  Showcased average bat speed .  Short path to the baseball, produced line drives.  Rhythm is a little choppy.  Recorded a high exit velocity o 84 mph.

Wade Rankin, OF, Columbus North HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 163 pounds, ran a 7.06-60 and was 78 from the OF.  Long, stiff arm action, high ¾ slot.  At the plate hits from an open stance.  Minimal load, short stride.  Average bat speed, short path.  Lacks extension.  Possesses hand speed.  Made hard contact in BP.  83 Exit velocity.  

Brandon Reid, OF, Brownsburg HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 180 pounder ran a 7.27-60 and was 88 from the OF from a long, high ¾ arm action.  Possesses good carry with accuracy. Clean exchange with fluid feet.  At the plate hits from slightly open setup and uses a short stride.  Good use of his lower half with good balance.  Average bat speed, level path.  Rhythm is a little choppy.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 78 mph. 

Justin Ruthrauff, OF, Andrean HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, ran a 7.41-60 and was 81 from the OF.  Over the top arm action with accuracy.  Choppy feet, plays through the baseball.  Offensively, hits out of a slight crouch.  Tends to dive during the stride.  Average balance and use of the lower half.  Level path with early rhythm.  Produced line drives during BP.  High exit velocity of 79 mph. 

Jackson Smeltz, OF, McCutcheon HS, 2018: 6-foot-3, 205 pounder ran a 7.43-60 and was 88 from the OF.  Long, high ¾ arm action.  Good carry on his throws with accuracy.  Lacks elite foot speed.  Sure hands in the field.  At the plate this from an open setup.  Hands tend to drop during the load.  Average bat speed, uphill swing plane.  High exit velocity of 82.
