Providence Wins Sectional Behind Jon Davis Two Hitter

By Ben Grossberg

Clarksville – Providence and Henryville faced off for the sectional 46 crown on Saturday night. It was a pitching battle between Providence’s Jon Davis and Henryville’ s Cody Reister for the most of the game until Providence broke open the game with a three run fifth inning.

Providence got on the board early with a sacrifice fly by Justin Starr scoring Ben Shahroudi, who had singled to start the game.

The 1-0 score held up for a while as both pitchers worked cleanly through the opposing lineup.

In the fifth Providence’s offense got going. Nick Campbell led off the inning with a walk and Jon Davis followed that with a RBI double to left center bringing Campbell all the way around for a run. Austin Dickey then lined a pitch to center. The centerfielder dove for the ball, but was unable to make the play giving Dickey a RBI double of his own. Garrett Polston came on to run for Dickey and after a sac bunt moved him to third, Polston scored on a passed ball giving Providence a 4-0 lead.

Four runs was more than enough for Davis who only ran into trouble once, in the fifth inning. After Providence’s big offensive output in the top of the fifth Henryville looked for a counter in the bottom. Lead off walks to Cody Brock and Austin Bowles had Henryville poised for a big inning. Unfazed Davis struck out the next batter and got a fielder’s choice after that to get two outs in the inning. He ooked like he was going to get out of the inning unscathed, but was called for a balk allowing the only run of the game for Henryville.

In the seventh with a Sectional Championship on the line Davis worked through Henryville’s offense with ease. After getting the first out, an error gave Henryville a runner. Davis went back to the mound and got the next two batters to hit into outs to end the game giving Prodvidence a 4-1 win. Davis went all seven innings allowing one run, just two hits, and struck out seven to put Providence into the Regional.
